Home Hack!
Most exterior doors use short screws in the strike plate.
Swap them for 2.5–3” screws so they go into the wall stud making them more secure and harder to kick in.
When I first heard that something as simple as changing screws in a door strike plate could improve home security, I was skeptical. But after trying the upgrade myself, I realized how effective it actually is. Most exterior doors have strike plates attached to the door frame using short screws, which only anchor into the door frame’s soft wood. These short screws don’t provide much resistance if someone tries to kick the door open. I replaced the short screws with longer 2.5 to 3-inch screws that extend into the wall studs behind the door frame. This small adjustment makes the door frame much sturdier and far less likely to give way under force. Since the wall studs are solid framing members, the longer screws provide a secure anchor that significantly strengthens the entire door assembly. Not only is this a budget-friendly DIY project, but it also requires minimal tools—a drill and longer screws are all you need. I chose screws labeled for exterior use to prevent rusting over time. The process only took me about 15 minutes per door, and the peace of mind afterward was well worth it. This hack is especially valuable for renters or homeowners who want to enhance security without expensive door replacements or complicated installations. It’s one of the cheapest security upgrades you can make, yet it has a big impact on protecting your home from break-ins. Along with reinforcing door frames, consider other complementary measures like installing quality deadbolts and security cameras for comprehensive home safety. Overall, think of these longer screws as the unsung heroes of home security—they may be small, but they make a huge difference in keeping your home safer and more secure.
