I cannot be the only oneeeee.
Also, who else has a toddler obssessed with turning the lights on and off bc it drives me insaneeee 🫠
Having a toddler obsessed with turning the lights on and off is something many parents can relate to. This repetitive behavior can often feel overwhelming, especially when combined with other common triggers of overstimulation like certain sounds or textures. From personal experience, one of the hardest things was figuring out how to address this need for sensory input without discouraging the child's curiosity. One trick I found helpful was to redirect my toddler's attention to alternative sensory activities that were equally engaging but less disruptive. For example, sensory bins with safe objects to explore, or playing with light toys that change colors when touched. This seemed to satisfy their fascination with lights and movement. It’s also important to acknowledge the role of overstimulation in these behaviors. Toddlers can become overstimulated by sounds like the constant switching noise or other kitchen sounds like crumbs underfoot, as mentioned by many parents. Recognizing these triggers allowed me to create calmer environments by using white noise machines or dimmer lighting. Additionally, consistent boundaries and calmly explaining why lights need to stay off can gradually help toddlers understand limits. However, patience is key as this is a phase rooted in their developmental stage where they test cause and effect. Incorporating these approaches can help reduce the stress that comes from your toddler’s repetitive light-switching while supporting their natural curiosity and sensory needs effectively.
