Self Help vs Fiction

#currentlyreading #lemon8bookclub #lemon8challenge

It’s On Me - Started reading this one after hearing about it on a podcast. It interested me because it was described as a book about aligning your life to who you actually are as a person and your personal interests rather than kinda just going along in life on autopilot. I felt a strong resonance bc I’ve been feeling this way and called to make a shift in my life lately to live more aligned with my values and so far this book has been a great inspiration for me to begin to take action or at least really evaluate my life right now in search of areas that are not aligned.

Attached - If you find yourself in similar cycles and patterns that do not serve you in relationships, I highly recommend this one as it covers attachment theory very well and does a great job at showing you how it plays out in your relationships. Not only that, but it provides tools to help you get out of these cycles. The only reason I didn’t give this one a 10 out of 10 is because I feel like it didn’t touch enough on how to make an anxious-avoidant dynamic work rather than just leaving the relationship if you’re in this dynamic already and that’s not very helpful for folks that are, if it’s not a toxic situation of course. Personally I believe this dynamic could be a catalyst for growth if there are two willing partners but that’s a topic for another post 🙊

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder - If you are into mystery stories, this one is a good one! The story is surrounding a murder case that a high school senior is trying to uncover for her senior project and it’s a very easy read and pretty lighthearted (so far at least — I’m on chapter 19 which is about halfway through the book). I’ve found it pretty funny at times and reminiscent of my teen years 🥲

I give it a 8/10 bc sometimes the main character puts herself in dumb situations lol

... Read moreHey bookworms! You know that eternal dilemma we all face: should I pick up a self-help book to level up my life, or get completely lost in a captivating fiction story? I've been wrestling with this myself lately, especially with my current reads spanning both genres. It really got me thinking about the unique magic each type of book brings to our lives and how they cater to different needs. For me, self-help books are like having a personal coach or a wise friend guiding you through life's challenges. When I picked up 'It's On Me,' for instance, it was an incredibly 'eye opening' and 'thought provoking' experience. It nudged me to evaluate my life and start making shifts towards living more aligned with my values and pursuing authentic interests, rather than just cruising on autopilot. It's all about fostering 'inner consent, resonance, and authenticity' – truly powerful stuff for personal growth. Similarly, 'Attached.' became my go-to for understanding relationship dynamics. It didn't just explain attachment theory; it provided concrete tools to break free from unhelpful cycles. I learned so much about the 'dependency paradox' and how our 'cultural perception of intimacy and independence' can shape our relationships. It’s helped me consider how to 'assume the best in conflict situations' and recognize 'self-fulfilling prophecies in insecure attachment styles' in my own life. These books are about direct action, understanding, and personal evolution. On the flip side, there's the irresistible pull of fiction. When I need a break, a pure escape, or just want to relax, a good story is my sanctuary. 'A Good Girl's Guide to Murder' has been exactly that – an easy, lighthearted read that pulls me into a thrilling mystery. Fiction offers a different kind of nourishment. It allows me to step into someone else's shoes, experience adventures, and see the world from countless perspectives without any personal stakes. It sparks imagination, fosters empathy, and provides a much-needed mental break from the daily grind. Sometimes, after a long day, my brain just needs to unwind with a captivating plot, and fiction delivers that perfectly. So, which one should you choose? Honestly, I don't think it's an either/or situation. Both self-help and fiction hold immense value, and they can even complement each other! When you're actively seeking solutions, understanding, or personal transformation, self-help books offer direct pathways. But when you need to recharge, expand your emotional intelligence through storytelling, or simply find joy in a narrative, fiction is your perfect companion. My personal strategy is to balance them – maybe a self-help read to kickstart the week with motivation, and a fiction novel for cozy evenings or weekend escapes. It really depends on what your mind and spirit are craving at that moment. Both genres are essential parts of my reading journey, offering different, yet equally rewarding, experiences.
