... Read moreTeaching play skills to autistic children often requires creativity and patience, but it doesn't mean you have to invest in expensive therapy toys. Everyday objects around the home—like measuring cups, balloons, laundry baskets, scarves, and empty boxes—are valuable tools that encourage connection, exploration, and developmental growth. For example, using measuring cups and spoons in play helps develop fine motor skills and turn-taking. Inviting your child to tap, scoop, or pour alongside you while using simple prompts like “scoop, scoop” encourages imitation and joint attention, which are important social communication skills. Balloons are another excellent, low-cost resource. Gently tapping or tossing a balloon back and forth introduces cause and effect, coordination, and joyful interaction. Making playful sounds when the balloon flies or bounces sparks curiosity and emotional engagement, often leading to smiles or laughter. Laundry baskets can transform into imaginative vehicles—like a rocket or car—when paired with fun sound effects like "vroom!" or pretending to drive to the moon. This kind of pretend play enhances cognitive flexibility and symbolic thinking, supporting social and emotional development in a delightful way. Waving scarves or dish towels during peekaboo games encourages visual tracking and attention regulation. Watching a scarf float down while saying “Whoooosh!” supports sensory processing and anticipation skills. It also opens up opportunities for your child to mimic gestures or initiate interactions. Empty boxes can become caves, boats, or rocket ships with added sound effects. Allowing your child space to choose how they engage with these objects empowers creativity and decision-making, which are critical for autonomy. These activities emphasize connection over conversation, making them especially effective for nonverbal autistic children. They promote engagement and learning through shared experiences rather than pressure to communicate verbally right away. Most importantly, making play fun and interactive encourages children to participate willingly. When they don’t feel like they’re “working” on skills, but rather just enjoying time with you and their favorite household items, developmental progress happens naturally and joyfully. So, grab those simple toys floating around your home, engage with your child in playful imitation, add lively sounds, and watch as they develop invaluable skills at their own pace. Remember, progress in play skills looks different for every child, so celebrate small achievements and follow your child’s lead. Tagging supportive communities and sharing your successes can also provide encouragement and new ideas on this rewarding journey.
