Parenting as an autistic ADHDer

Some might say, "if you're so overwhelmed, why did you have kids in the first place?" And truthfully? I had no idea I was autistic or ADHD before having children. How was I supposed to know I would be in a chronic state of overwhelm every day?

And besides that, parents are allowed to be overwhelmed. It's not a cakewalk, even for neurotypical folks.

How do you manage being an ADHDer or autistic person (or both!) caring for neurodivergent kids?

#lemon8partner #adhd #autism #neurodivergent #parenting

2024/11/20 Edited to

... Read moreParenting as an autistic ADHDer comes with its unique set of challenges. Many face a continuous cycle of overwhelm, often questioning their capacity to manage both their needs and those of their children. Recognizing the chronic overwhelm is the first step towards finding effective strategies. For instance, establishing routines can be beneficial, though implementing them may feel daunting. Incorporating small systems can create a sense of structure and predictability, which is crucial for both the parent and the children. Emphasizing emotional regulation is also key: sharing experiences of 'catch-22' situations with children provides a model for them in learning how to manage their emotions. Seeking support, whether through partners, friends, or community groups, can alleviate the feeling of being alone in this journey. Remember, it’s okay to ask for help – parenting itself is challenging, and as neurodivergent individuals, acknowledging our needs is vital to create a nurturing environment for everyone involved. Embrace the shared experiences and know you are not alone in this beautiful yet challenging journey of parenting.

I can totally relate to you by being overwhelmed all the time. But I take things moment by moment and show compassion to myself because in the end I’m doing the best I can. Take the wins when you can. ☺️
