scholarship tip #8

Getting a scholarship is a huge honor and you should be incredibly grateful to receive any scholarship! It is so important to send the organization a thank you letter to show your appreciation!

I’ve added an example note to use as a reference! You can also send this along with your transcript, headshot, or any other materials they requested from you!

If you want to win some scholarships, check out my scholarship series to learn about where to find scholarships and tips to apply for them!!

... Read moreHey everyone! So, we've talked about the basics of scholarship thank-you notes, and I even shared an example. But let's dive a little deeper into why this small act of gratitude can make a massive difference, especially when you're thinking, 'how will this scholarship really help me in the long run?' Trust me, it's more than just good manners; it's a strategic move for your future! First off, a well-crafted thank-you note isn't just about showing appreciation (though that's super important!). It's about professionalism. Scholarship committees and donors are investing in *you*. When you take the time to send a thoughtful note, you're confirming to them that their investment was well-placed. It shows you're responsible, respectful, and serious about your education. This professionalism can resonate, especially if you're hoping for scholarship renewal in subsequent years, or if the organization offers other opportunities down the line. I've personally seen how strong follow-up can keep you top-of-mind for future support! Now, let's talk timing. When should you send it? Ideally, within a week or two of receiving the scholarship notification. Don't procrastinate! A timely thank-you shows enthusiasm and promptness. Whether it's an email or a mailed letter (which can often leave a more memorable impression), make sure it gets there while your appreciation is still fresh. What about the content? Beyond thanking them, really personalize it. The OCR mentioned personalizing the letter, and it's key! Think about how this specific scholarship will impact your life. Will it reduce your need for student loans? Allow you to focus more on your studies instead of working extra hours? Enable you to pursue a specific project or internship? Share these details! For example, you could write: "This scholarship will help me immensely by allowing me to dedicate more time to my research in sustainable engineering, a field I'm deeply passionate about, without the added financial stress." This makes your gratitude tangible and connects your success directly to their generosity. Don't forget to mention how you plan to use the funds and reiterate your academic or career goals. This assures the donors that their money is going towards a meaningful cause – your success. Also, if there was a specific person who helped you with the application or selection process, a quick mention of their name can go a long way. Another pro tip: proofread, proofread, proofread! A thank-you note full of typos undermines your professionalism. Read it aloud, or even better, have a friend or family member give it a quick once-over. Finally, consider the format. While email is convenient, a handwritten note or a well-printed letter (especially if you're sending it with a transcript or headshot, as the original article mentioned) can feel more personal and stand out. If the scholarship committee requested digital submissions, then an email is perfectly fine, but make sure it's just as heartfelt and detailed. Remember, every interaction is an opportunity to build connections. A scholarship thank-you note isn't just a formality; it's a powerful tool to express genuine gratitude, confirm your commitment, and potentially open doors to future academic and professional opportunities. It’s part of ensuring that this scholarship will help you not just now, but throughout your educational journey!
