Hey fellow parents! As a stay-at-home mom, I'm always looking for ways to provide the best for my little one while also being mindful of our budget. Making homemade baby food has been a game-changer for us, and honestly, it's so much easier than you might think! My latest go-to is this super simple broccoli puree, and I'm excited to share all my tips and tricks with you. It’s a fantastic way to introduce your baby to healthy greens right from the start. First things first, let's talk about the magic of homemade broccoli puree. It’s packed with nutrients and so fresh! You don't need fancy equipment, but I personally love using a baby Nutribullet for its convenience, though any good blender or food processor will do. It makes the 'make baby food with me' process so much smoother! Here’s my simple process: Choose Fresh Broccoli: Pick a head of broccoli that looks vibrant green and firm. Wash it thoroughly under cold water to ensure it's clean for your baby. Prep the Florets: Cut the broccoli into small florets. You can use the stems too, just peel off the tough outer layer and chop them into smaller pieces for easier blending. Steam for Perfection: Place the florets in a steamer basket over boiling water. Steam for about 15 minutes, or until they are fork-tender. This ensures they're soft enough for your baby and retains more nutrients compared to boiling. Blend to Desired Consistency: Transfer the steamed broccoli to your blender or baby Nutribullet. Now for the secret to perfect puree: add water or milk to desired consistency & blend. You can use the steaming liquid, breast milk, or formula. Start with a small amount and add more gradually until you reach a smooth, lump-free consistency that’s right for your baby's age and stage. For younger babies just starting solids, a very thin, runny consistency is best. As they grow, you can make it thicker. Cool Down: Let the puree cool completely before storing. A little tip for texture: if you find your puree a bit too thick, don't hesitate to add more liquid. If it's too thin, you can try mixing in a little baby rice cereal or even some sweet potato puree to thicken it up later. Broccoli is a wonderful first food because it’s rich in vitamins C and K, fiber, and iron. I started introducing it to my little one around 6 months, after they had tried a few single-grain cereals and other simple purees. Always introduce one new food at a time and wait a few days to check for any allergic reactions. Your baby might love broccoli on its own, but it’s also fantastic for mixing! This is where you can get creative and boost the flavor and nutrition. Some of my favorite combinations when thinking about 'what to mix with broccoli puree for baby' are: Broccoli and Potato Puree: A classic combo that adds a creamy texture and mild flavor. Broccoli and Sweet Potato Puree: The natural sweetness of sweet potato balances broccoli's slightly bitter notes beautifully. Broccoli and Apple Puree: For a fruity twist, a small amount of apple can make it more palatable for pickier eaters. Broccoli and Pear Puree: Similar to apple, pear offers a gentle sweetness. Broccoli and Banana Puree: This might sound unusual, but banana adds a lovely creaminess and sweetness. Just make sure the banana is ripe! Broccoli and Carrot Puree: Another veggie power combo, adding more vitamins and a hint of sweetness. With Chicken or Beef: Once your baby is ready for meats, you can blend a small amount of cooked, shredded chicken or beef with the broccoli puree for a protein-packed meal. Just remember to introduce new ingredients one at a time. One of the best things about making baby food in batches is the easy storage. Once your puree is cooled, you can store it in the fridge for 3 days & freezer for 3 months. I use small freezer-safe containers or ice cube trays (like the ones from Momcozy mentioned in the original post!) for individual portions. Once frozen, pop the cubes out and transfer them to a freezer bag or larger container. This way, you always have a healthy meal ready to go. Just thaw overnight in the fridge or gently warm up when needed. Remember to always check the temperature before feeding it to your baby.
