SAVIN THEM TURTLES

You know, when I first started using the hashtag #turtlesavers, I never thought how deeply it would resonate with so many people. For me, it all began with a simple moment involving my precious granddaughter, and it completely changed our perspective on nature and conservation. One sunny afternoon, we were enjoying a walk near a local pond, something we do often. Suddenly, my granddaughter, with her keen eyes, pointed excitedly. “Grandma, look! What is that?” she exclaimed. There, right in the middle of the walking path, was a rather large turtle, looking a bit disoriented and definitely in harm's way. It was clear it was trying to get to the other side, likely heading to a nesting spot or another water source, but it was dangerously close to bikes and foot traffic. In that moment, we became turtle savers. We carefully observed its path, and I gently guided my granddaughter on how to approach it without startling it. We waited for a clear moment, making sure no one was zooming by, and then, with utmost care, we encouraged it to move towards the safer, grassy bank heading in the direction it was already trying to go. We didn’t pick it up, as that can be stressful for them and sometimes even illegal depending on the species, but we created a safe passage. Watching that turtle slowly but surely make its way to safety, with my granddaughter cheering it on, was a truly heartwarming experience. She learned firsthand the importance of respecting wildlife and lending a helping hand, even to the smallest creatures. But what does it truly mean to be a #turtlesaver? It’s not always about grand rescues. Often, it's about awareness and small, consistent actions. For us, it means keeping an eye out for turtles on roads, especially during spring and early summer when they are most active, often looking for nesting sites. If you see one, and it's safe to do so, you can help it cross in the direction it's heading. It also means reducing plastic waste, as plastic pollution is a massive threat to marine turtles who often mistake bags for jellyfish, their food source. Supporting local conservation groups that protect turtle habitats and nests is another fantastic way to contribute. We’ve also learned that leaving wild turtle nests undisturbed is crucial. If you happen to stumble upon a nest (often identifiable by disturbed sand or soil), the best thing to do is to leave it be and perhaps contact a local wildlife rescue or conservation group for advice. They can properly monitor and protect it. Educating others, especially children, about the vital role turtles play in our ecosystems is also a powerful form of turtle saving. They help maintain healthy aquatic environments and are incredible indicators of ecological health. Watching my granddaughter understand this connection to nature, seeing her empathy grow, has been one of my greatest joys. So, when people ask me 'what is that?' about #turtlesavers, I tell them it's about being present, being kind, and doing whatever little you can. You don't need to be a marine biologist to make a difference; sometimes, it's just about helping a little turtle cross the road.
