I’ve always struggled with the idea of “getting rid of your old self.”

My old self didn’t do anything wrong. He was trying to survive one of the hardest seasons of my life.

I can’t abandon the part of me that did everything it could to protect me when I couldn’t protect myself.

Maybe growth isn’t about erasing who you were. Maybe it’s about understanding why that version of you existed in the first place.

To me, passion feels like a deeper force that keeps moving when your conscious mind is exhausted. It’s the part of you that carries you when you can’t carry yourself.

I like to think there’s a stronger self within us—steady, patient, and always pushing us forward until we’re ready to recognize it and work with it instead of against it.

Maybe the goal isn’t to destroy your old self.

Maybe it’s to thank that version of you for surviving… and then walk forward together.

Just my thoughts. I’m learning to let them flow.

❤️ If you read this thread, thank you.

... Read moreReflecting on the idea of not abandoning our old selves has resonated deeply with me, especially through my own experiences with personal transformation. Often, society encourages us to think of growth as a process of total reinvention—discarding who we once were in favor of a 'better' version. But this perspective can overlook the valuable lessons our past selves carry. In my own journey, I realized that my previous struggles and the ways I coped were survival mechanisms, shaped by the challenges I faced at the time. These parts of myself, though imperfect, were essential for navigating hardship and deserve recognition and gratitude rather than dismissal. Understanding this has allowed me to redefine growth not as erasure but as integration—where past and present selves coexist and collaborate. When passion feels overwhelming or when exhaustion sets in, it’s that deeper, resilient force within that carries one forward. It’s not about fighting who I was but about acknowledging why that version existed and what it protected within me. In practical terms, this approach helped me practice self-compassion and patience, fostering a stronger inner dialogue. Instead of self-criticism, I started to respond with understanding and kindness, which built a more sustainable, authentic motivation for change rather than fleeting bursts of willpower. If you're like me and have wrestled with 'getting rid of your old self,' consider inviting that part of you into your present journey. Thank your past self for all the survival and growth, then move forward not with conflict, but in cooperation. This mindset shift has transformed how I approach challenges and has made my personal growth feel more complete and meaningful.
