Ever feel like BookTok is speaking another language?

Red herring. Locked room. Unreliable narrator. Whodunit.

If you’ve ever nodded along without actually knowing what a term means, this series is for you.

Save this for the next time you’re browsing mystery recommendations, and tell me what genre’s jargon I should decode next.

... Read moreIf you’re diving into the world of mystery books on BookTok or anywhere else, you’ve probably encountered some terms that sound intriguing but are a bit mystifying at first. Just like in any hobby or community, the mystery genre has its own specialized language that can make new readers feel a little lost. For example, a "red herring" is a classic storytelling device used to mislead the reader or characters. It’s a deliberate false clue that draws attention away from the real culprit. I remember my first mystery novel that used red herrings extensively—it made the plot twisting and unpredictable, keeping me guessing until the very last page. Then there’s the "locked room" mystery, which fascinates me personally. It’s a type of puzzle where a crime—usually a murder—occurs under seemingly impossible conditions, such as in a sealed room with no way in or out. This trope challenges readers to think creatively about how the crime was committed, and I always enjoy trying to solve it alongside the detective. "Unreliable narrator" is another term you might hear frequently. This refers to a storyteller whose version of events can’t be fully trusted, adding layers of complexity and suspense to the narrative. One of my favorite reads with an unreliable narrator completely changed the story's meaning by its surprising revelation toward the end. "Whodunit" is probably the most well-known mystery term, referring to a story where the identity of the criminal is the central question. Books like those featuring amateur sleuths or police procedurals fit neatly into this category, each offering different styles of unfolding the mystery. Understanding terms like "alibi," "deduction," "cozy mystery," and "psychological thriller" can greatly enhance your reading experience and help you choose books that suit your taste. For instance, cozy mysteries often feature charming small-town settings and mild content, while psychological thrillers dive deep into characters’ minds and motives. Next time you browse BookTok or mystery book recommendations, try keeping these terms in mind—they’ll empower you to engage more fully with the genre and join conversations confidently. Plus, unraveling these jargon words feels like solving a puzzle itself, adding fun to your reading journey. Feel free to share which mystery terms you’ve found confusing or would love to have decoded next—there’s a world of exciting genre jargon to explore!
