I wish I would have known that barred rock hens was mean 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️ #charwonak #foryoupage #backyardchickens
Having raised a flock of 38 chickens, including 35 hens and 3 roosters, I've learned that Barred Rock hens can indeed be unexpectedly feisty. These hens tend to have strong personalities and can sometimes be aggressive towards other chickens, especially if they feel their territory is threatened. In my experience, it’s important to create sufficient space to minimize conflict within the flock. Barred Rocks thrive in environments where they have room to roam and establish a social hierarchy without too much stress. Regularly checking your flock for signs of bullying or pecking injuries is also crucial. One way to help ease tension is to provide plenty of distractions, such as scatter feeds or hanging treats, which can keep them busy and reduce aggressive behaviors. Additionally, introducing new chickens gradually and ensuring there are enough resources like feeders and waterers can prevent competition. Knowing how Barred Rock hens behave can save you headaches and help build a harmonious backyard chicken environment. Despite their mean streak, they are great layers and hardy birds, making them worth the effort in managing their temperament.
