Discover A Relationship vs Religion

Religion vs. Relationship

It is He who has qualified us as ministers and dispensers of a new covenant of salvation through Christ, not as ministers of the letter (of legally written code) but of the Spirit. For the code of the Law kills, but the Holy Spirit makes alive.

—2 Corinthians 3:6

I sometimes feel that religion is killing people. There are so many precious individuals seeking a relationship with God, and the religious community continues to tell them something else they need to “do” to be acceptable to Him.

Jesus spoke of His personal relationship with the Father, and the religious leaders of His day persecuted Him. It amazes me how certain people always want to oppose anyone who talks about God in a personal way or believes they have any power from God. It is evident that Satan hates our personal relationship with God and the power it bestows upon us.

In certain religious circles, if we were to discuss God as if we knew Him, we would be judged and criticized. People would ask, “Who do you think you are?” Religion wants us to picture God as being distant somewhere up in the sky, unattainable by anyone except the elite of the church. Furthermore, they want us to believe that He can only be reached through rule-keeping and good behavior. This “religious spirit” was prevalent in Jesus’ day; even though He died to end it and bring people into close personal relationship with Himself, the Holy Spirit, and the Father, that same spirit still torments people to this day—if they do not know the truth.

Religion says, “You must find a way, no matter how impossible it may seem. You must do it…keep the rules or face punishment.” But relationship says, “Do your best because you love Me. I know your heart.

Admit your faults, repent of your mistakes, and simply keep loving Me.”

NEW DAY NEW YOU - 163

... Read moreIn today’s world, the conversation surrounding faith often centers on the distinction between religion and personal relationship with God. Many people are feeling overwhelmed by the rigid expectations set by organized religion, which can sometimes detract from true spiritual growth. Instead of fostering a loving connection with God, many religious frameworks emphasize rule-following and behavioral standards which can lead to feelings of inadequacy and fear of punishment. This mindset can hinder individuals from experiencing the grace and love that comes from a personal relationship with the divine. Verses like 2 Corinthians 3:6 highlight the difference between the letter of the law that can lead to spiritual death and the life-giving power of the Holy Spirit. The essence of Christianity is not about adhering to stringent rules but embracing a loving relationship with God who knows our hearts. Many believers find themselves yearning for a more intimate connection with God, one that allows them to openly express their doubts, fears, and hopes without fear of judgment. This relationship emphasizes grace, forgiveness, and continuous growth. Engaging with scripture becomes less about legality and more about discovering the nature of God’s character and His incredible love for humanity. Life’s challenges may often prompt individuals to seek solace in traditional religious practices. However, forming a direct relationship with God can provide deeper insights and transformative experiences. Understanding that God desires to be known personally and intimately is a powerful realization that encourages many to move away from rigid religious structures towards a more fluid and compassionate faith experience. As individuals explore their faith journeys, they may find that fostering a genuine relationship with God not only enriches their spiritual lives but also provides emotional and mental wellness. It prompts a realization that God is not a distant figure to be appeased but a loving Father ready to embrace us, faults and all. Therefore, it is essential to navigate the waters of faith with a focus on personal relationship, thereby fulfilling one's spiritual needs and transforming their lives.
