body piercing saved my self-confidence

Having Tourette’s and being trans was a big source of self-consciousness in my teens, and body piercing gave me a huge confidence boost. I remember being 18 when my Tourette’s had reached its worst and walking into a piercing studio with my best friend. I was so scared of being turned away or unable to get my navel piercing because it felt like I could never sit still, but the piercer I saw had experience working with tic disorders and was so patient with me.

Being able to sit through getting pierced felt like proving to myself that I can do whatever I’m determined to do despite having Tourette’s.

I’ve since been pierced numerous times specifically when trying to overcome insecurities or hardships. The day I started taking testosterone was when I did my septum piercing- I was terrified of all the what-ifs of transitioning, but being able to walk myself through the nervousness and pain of a piercing was a reminder that I can get myself through discomfort and come out just fine :)

... Read moreBody piercing serves as a powerful tool for self-expression and confidence building. Many individuals, especially those facing personal challenges, find that piercings can symbolize resilience and courage. Studies have shown that body modifications release endorphins, creating a sense of euphoria during and after the process. This therapeutic effect can be particularly significant for people with anxiety or self-image issues, as the act of undergoing a piercing may act as a rite of passage or a personal victory. For many, each new piercing holds a story of overcoming fears or embracing a new identity. For instance, getting a septum piercing during a transitional phase can represent significant change and empowerment. By choosing to alter your body, you assert control over your personal narrative. This journey is often shared within communities, where individuals support each other by emphasizing the importance of self-love and acceptance. Ultimately, body piercing can transcend mere decoration; it becomes a testament to personal growth and embracing one’s true self.
