Waiting for a second lung transplant can be an overwhelming and emotional experience. After more than a year and a half on the transplant waiting list, the uncertainty about when a matching donor lung will become available can understandably cause anxiety. One of the main challenges for people waiting for a lung transplant is the compatibility based on antibodies. In my case, having high antibodies means that only about 17% of the population are potential matches, which can make the wait even longer. It's important to have a strong healthcare team and support system while navigating this journey. I've been fortunate to be accepted by Temple Health, which specializes in transplant care and has a dedicated team to guide me through every step. Staying at home while waiting can be nerve-wracking because the timing is unpredictable, ranging from months to years. During this period, maintaining overall health and managing chronic conditions such as pulmonary hypertension and interstitial lung disease is critical. Organ donation awareness plays a vital role in increasing the availability of donor lungs. Sharing stories and experiences helps highlight how vital organ donation is for those with chronic illnesses requiring transplants. For anyone reading this who wants to support transplant patients, registering as an organ donor can make a significant difference. Each transplant journey is unique, and while the road may be long and uncertain, the relief and hope upon finally receiving the call for a potential match are indescribable. I'm sharing my updates to encourage others facing similar struggles and to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation and the resilience required during this challenging process.
