So, you've seen my art dump with a mix of fanart and OCs, and maybe you're wondering, 'What exactly is an OC, or even fanart?' I get asked this a lot, especially when I share my latest creations, so I thought I'd dive a little deeper into what these terms mean to me as an artist and why I love creating both! What's an Original Character (OC)? For me, an OC, or Original Character, is a character that I've completely dreamed up from scratch. They come straight from my imagination, with their own unique look, personality, and story. Think of characters like my 'Applepillar' – a quirky red creature with an apple for a head and green feet – or 'Alan,' the humanoid with a long nose and blue tie. Even the character with the star on its head, wearing a striped shirt and baggy pants, skateboarding around, or the one with blue curly hair, a yellow face, a blue jacket, red and white striped pants, and a red ascot, these are all OCs. I get to decide everything about them, from their appearance (like the sleeping cap character holding a teddy bear) to their background. It’s incredibly rewarding to bring a brand new personality to life on paper! Creating OCs is where I really get to stretch my creative muscles and build my own little worlds. And what about Fanart? Fanart, on the other hand, is my way of showing love for existing characters, shows, or games that I adore. It's taking a character someone else created, like Garfield, and drawing them in my own style or in a new scenario. My wide-eyed Garfield drawing, for instance, is a tribute to that iconic lazy cat! It’s super fun to take a character I already love and give them my own artistic spin. It’s a way to connect with other fans and celebrate the things that inspire me. Sometimes, it’s even a great way to practice different styles or expressions without the pressure of inventing a whole new design. Why do I create both? Honestly, both OC art and fanart fulfill different creative needs for me. Fanart is like a comforting hug – I get to play with established characters and settings, which can be a great warm-up or a fun break. It’s also an amazing way to connect with the community. When I share my Garfield art, I know there are countless others who love him too! Creating OCs is a different kind of joy. It’s about building something entirely new, watching a character evolve from a simple sketch into something with its own life.
