Walking around Kokuseiji Temple
Kokusei-ji Temple was built by his disciples in 598 AD based on the will and blueprint of the founder of the Tendai sect, Chiei Hoshi. It was originally called "Tendai-ji Temple" and was built by Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty in 605 AD. Emperor Yang gave the name "Kokusei-ji Temple" in the sense that "the country will be clean when the temple is completed," symbolizing the peace and prosperity of the country.
Kokusei-ji Temple, the ancestor temple of the Tendai sect, has been a pilgrimage site for the disciples of the Tendai sect for generations, and is also a sacred place for Koreans and Japanese people to remember their ancestors. Jianjin Daishi of the Tang Dynasty visited this place before going to Japan. Saicho Daishi of Japan went to Tang in 804 to seek Buddhism. He learned the Tendai sect from the monks of Kokusei-ji Temple, Dosui and Heungman. After returning home, he revered Kokusei-ji Temple as his ancestor temple and founded the Japanese Tendai sect.
Temples of the Tendai sect are scattered throughout Japan and mainly concentrated in the following areas.
