Repotting Plants Tutorial | Plant Care Tips

1/19 Edited to

... Read moreRepotting plants is a key step to ensure the health and continued growth of your indoor garden. From my experience, one of the most important things to keep in mind is timing. Plants generally need repotting every 1 to 2 years, or whenever their roots start to outgrow the current pot. You'll know this is necessary when roots begin circling the pot or growing out of drainage holes. Before repotting, gather fresh, well-draining potting soil suitable for your specific plant species. I found that mixing in perlite or orchid bark can improve aeration and prevent waterlogging. Also, choose a new pot that is just 1-2 inches larger in diameter than the old one; a pot that is too large can cause excess moisture retention and root rot. When removing the plant from its pot, gently loosen the soil to avoid damaging the root ball. If the roots are tightly wound, lightly tease them apart to encourage outward growth in the new soil. Trim any dead or rotting roots using sterilized scissors. After placing the plant in its new container, fill around the roots with fresh soil and press down lightly to eliminate air pockets but don’t compact it too much. Water thoroughly after repotting to help settle the soil and hydrate the plant. I recommend placing freshly repotted plants in indirect light for a few days to reduce transplant shock. Avoid fertilizing immediately after repotting; wait at least a month to allow the plant to adjust. Overall, repotting can seem intimidating initially, but with these simple steps and a careful approach, your plants will flourish well into the future. Happy gardening!
