✨Onward to Osaka✨ 🚆

Last morning in Iwakuni before we hop on the train to Osaka, so here’s a completely professional travel checklist based on lived experience:

Step 1: Eat.

Always eat before travel. Hangry decisions ruin itineraries and relationships.

Step 2: Ride the train.

Have tickets ready. Pretend you know where you’re going. Confidence is key. (Is this me? No, but I, thankfully, have others in the group who have taken care of this 😜)

Step 3: Attempt to pack.

This is where chaos enters. Somehow everything fit just the other day and now it does not.

Step 4: Conduct a child inventory.

Count them. Recount them.

Double-check you didn’t leave a favorite item, shoe, or emotional support blanket (each kid had to bring one) behind.

Step 5: Accept that something will still be forgotten.

This is the way. (Yes, this is a Star Wars reference)

Heading to Osaka with snacks packed, patience activated, and prayers requested. 🙏

... Read moreIt's true, getting ready for a big family move, even just within Japan, can be a whirlwind! While the main checklist covers the essentials for a smooth departure, there's always more to consider, especially when you're transitioning between places like Iwakuni and Osaka. For those planning their own journey from Iwakuni to Osaka, let's talk about that train ride. The bullet train, or Shinkansen, is an incredible experience, but a little preparation goes a long way, especially with little ones. Make sure to book your tickets in advance, particularly if you need specific seating (like facing seats for a family, or near the luggage areas). Checking the Japan Rail Pass eligibility is crucial if you're doing extensive travel; it can be a fantastic money-saver, but ensure it aligns with your itinerary. Onboard, the journey is surprisingly smooth and fast, typically taking a few hours with transfers depending on your exact route. For the kids, having a dedicated backpack with their favorite snacks, a new small toy, or a tablet pre-loaded with movies can be a game-changer. Remember, Japanese trains are known for their quiet atmosphere, so encourage quiet play and provide headphones if they're watching something. While there are often food trolleys that pass by, having your own stash of familiar snacks and drinks is always a lifesaver. Don't forget that luggage space can be limited, especially for oversized bags, so try to consolidate or look into luggage forwarding services if you have many large cases. And before you even think about hopping on that train, if you've found yourself with a little extra time in Iwakuni, there are definitely some gems worth exploring to make the most of your stay. Most famously, the stunning Kintaikyo Bridge is a must-see – its unique arched design is truly picturesque, and walking across it feels like stepping back in time. It’s perfect for a leisurely stroll and some memorable family photos. Just a short ropeway ride up from the bridge, you'll find Iwakuni Castle, offering fantastic panoramic views of the city and surrounding areas – a great way to combine history with a fun ascent. For something a bit unique and certainly kid-friendly, the White Snake Museum is surprisingly fascinating, showcasing the rare and revered albino Japanese rat snakes that are native to the area. It’s a small city, but these spots provide a wonderful glimpse into local culture and history, making your departure even more memorable. Sometimes, despite the best checklists, you realize you've forgotten something crucial or need an unexpected item for your family. If you're in a pinch, big stores like Nitori, which has branches in larger cities like Hiroshima (a potential stop on the way to Osaka) and Osaka itself, can be a lifesaver. They offer everything from household essentials to travel accessories and even bedding or storage solutions – perfect for when a kid's favorite blanket somehow got left behind or you need a temporary solution for organizing travel clutter. Their wide selection means you’re likely to find what you need. And speaking of family-friendly spots, if you're looking for a place to unwind or grab some local provisions before or after your journey, places like Solanowa (often referring to community spaces, markets, or roadside stations in Japan) can offer a great opportunity to grab some local fare, fresh produce, or let the kids burn off some energy in an open area. Knowing these options exist can really ease the stress of travel. Ultimately, whether it's managing the logistics of the Shinkansen, squeezing in some last-minute sightseeing in Iwakuni, or making an emergency stop for forgotten items, embracing the journey and being adaptable is key. Every trip is an adventure, and these little insights from personal experience can hopefully make yours even better!
