📚 What BookTok Readers Gravitate Toward

After spending a lot of time in bookish spaces online, there are a few patterns I see come up again and again, and honestly, they make total sense.

BookTok readers tend to love:

• Strong female leads who are capable, flawed, and allowed to make mistakes

• Stories that are part of a series, so the investment pays off over time

• Plot-driven narratives with real character development, things happen, but the characters change too

• Genre blending, especially mystery layered with paranormal or speculative elements

• Subplots that simmer across books instead of being neatly wrapped up right away

These are the kinds of stories I’m drawn to as a reader, and they’re also the kinds of stories I write, including my novel The Missing Reflection. I’m interested in long-game storytelling that trusts readers to stay curious and engaged.

If those elements are what make you add a book to your TBR, we probably have very similar taste.

📖 More info about my work is linked in my bio.

Now I’m curious 👇

What’s the one thing that always makes you pick up a book?

... Read moreAs an avid BookTok follower and reader, I've noticed firsthand how certain themes consistently draw people in. The appeal of strong female leads, who are complex and allowed room to grow and err, resonates deeply because it mirrors real-life experiences and challenges. When characters evolve through the story, it creates a genuine connection that keeps you turning the pages. Series are another big factor—knowing the story extends beyond a single book allows readers to invest emotionally and anticipate future developments. The layered subplots that simmer across multiple books build suspense and foster a sense of community among fans who speculate and discuss theories online. Genre blending, especially mixing mystery with paranormal or speculative elements, adds intriguing unpredictability. It keeps the narrative fresh and caters to diverse reading tastes. I've personally found that these blends heighten the atmospheric tension and enrich the storytelling. Books like The Missing Reflection exemplify these qualities perfectly. The author's approach to long-game storytelling respects the reader's curiosity and intelligence, offering rewards over time rather than quick resolutions. This style creates a loyal readership eager to explore complex worlds and characters. If your TBR grows with books featuring flawed heroes, ongoing series, and genre mixings, you're in great company. What draws you to pick up a particular book? Is it the allure of character depth, the promise of an unfolding plot, or perhaps the magical twist that defies expectations? Sharing these preferences helps connect readers worldwide, making the reading journey even more rewarding.
