how to find your place in college 💐

to my incoming freshmen! here are my 3 tips on how to find your people + place in college :)

GET INVOLVED 🏃🏽‍♀️

getting involved in any clubs/research/events sets you up and is a form of networking in a non-professional setting!

ASK FOR HELP 🙋🏽‍♀️

if you are ever confused—ask! your campus is filled with resources + advsiors that want to help you succeed. don’t feel bad or like you shouldn’t take up space, it’s what they get paid to do!

STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF 🫶🏽

definitely a classic, but one that never goes wrong. if you keep pursuing what you love, you’re bound to meet people who love the same things! don’t stop being yourself, even if it means the journey is a little lonely at first

let me know if you want any other tips on anything else, or if you’ll be attending UMass Amherst! <3

... Read moreStarting college is an exciting, yet often daunting, adventure, especially if you're like me – an introvert from a small town navigating a big university like UMass. The initial excitement can quickly turn into anxiety when you realize just how many people and opportunities there are! While my original article shared three core tips, let's dive deeper into some practical ways to apply them and truly make your college experience your own. Beyond Just "Getting Involved" – Making Connections That Last "Get involved" is classic advice, but how do you do it effectively without burning out or feeling overwhelmed? When I first arrived, I felt like I had to join everything, but I quickly learned that quality beats quantity. Instead of signing up for every club at the campus selection fair, take some time to reflect on your genuine interests. As an Informatics major, I naturally gravitated towards tech-related groups, but I also explored clubs that aligned with my hobbies outside of academics. The key is to find groups where you can truly be yourself and where conversations flow naturally. Don't be afraid to try a few meetings before committing. Many clubs have introductory events, and this is a great chance to "meet the class" in a relaxed setting. Remember, joining clubs is not just about having an activity on your resume; it’s about finding your people, those who share your passions and make the college environment feel like home. These initial social connections can be invaluable. Leveraging Campus Resources: Your Secret Weapon My second tip was "ask for help," and this is where many incoming students miss out. Your university is packed with resources designed for your success, and it's one of the most important "things to know about college." Beyond academic advisors, consider these often-overlooked gems: career services (even as a freshman, they can help you explore options), mental health counseling (it's okay to need support!), writing centers, and even student activity offices that can connect you with niche communities. For me, asking questions about potential research opportunities within my Informatics department led to amazing connections and experiences I wouldn't have found otherwise. Never underestimate the power of simply asking a question – whether it's to a professor, a TA, or an upperclassman. People genuinely want to help, and these interactions can often lead to unexpected friendships or mentorships. Don't wait until you're struggling; proactively seek out these resources to enhance your overall university experience. Embracing Your Authentic Self in a New Environment Finally, "stay true to yourself" is profound advice, especially in a new college environment. It's easy to feel pressure to conform or change who you are to fit in. As an introvert, I sometimes felt overshadowed in larger social settings. However, I learned that my strength lay in seeking out meaningful, one-on-one connections or smaller group activities. Don't force yourself into situations that drain you. If you love a particular niche hobby, find a group for it, even if it's small. The OCR mentioned "joining clubs" and "asking questions," but the underlying goal is to connect authentically. It's about finding people who appreciate you for who you are, without pretense. While it might take time, and the journey might feel a little lonely at first, I promise that by consistently pursuing what you love and allowing yourself to be vulnerable, you will attract your tribe. Attending university is a journey of self-discovery, and the most rewarding part is finding your true people and true place. Trust in that process.
