Deployment!

Wow!!! Found one of my old external hard drives from 2010! This was my 2nd tour to Afghanistan! Most of the pics are all very gruesome because of the gunshot wounds, amputees due to IED’s and burned patients we had to take care of, so obviously you cannot see those, but here are a couple that are suitable for Facebook!

... Read moreGoing through old external hard drives can be quite an emotional journey, especially when the content is as intense as images from a deployment in Afghanistan. The 2010 tour, particularly with the Dustoff crews, represents some of the toughest and most significant experiences in a military medical career. Dustoff, being the call sign for medical evacuation helicopter teams, played a critical role in saving lives under fire and often in extremely hostile conditions. The markings seen on the photos, like "MALYUK," "727 DUSTOFF ALTUS CREW," and "DUSTOFF EW," reflect the specific units and missions that were part of that deployment. These crews were responsible for rapid evacuation of wounded soldiers, including those with gunshot wounds, amputations due to IED blasts, and severe burns. While many images are understandably graphic and difficult to share, the few suitable for wider viewing provide valuable insight into the realities faced by medical personnel and the courage displayed by both patients and their caregivers. From a personal standpoint, revisiting these photos brings a wave of mixed emotions—pride in the mission accomplished, sorrow for the suffering witnessed, and respect for the resilience of those involved. The experience highlights the importance of documentation and storytelling in preserving the history and lessons of military medical operations. Such archives not only honor the sacrifices made but also serve as educational tools for current and future medical teams. For those interested in military medical service or the history of the Afghanistan conflict, these photographs and the stories behind them offer a compelling connection to the past, emphasizing the human side behind every mission call sign like "DUSTOFF" and each crew member's dedication in saving lives against incredible odds.
