Because their attention span is limited during these early stages, trying to stretch the practice time can lead to frustration or disinterest. In my experience, keeping each learning session around ten minutes allows children to remain engaged without feeling overwhelmed. This natural pacing helps them build a mental connection to the characters in a calm and familiar setting rather than rushing to memorize many words at once. Also, it’s important to be responsive to the child's cues — if they appear distracted or restless, it’s perfectly fine to pause and resume later. The goal is to build a positive and relaxed attitude toward reading rather than pushing for completion with exhaustion. Creating a bilingual environment where Cantonese is valued alongside Mandarin can ease the transition since children maintain confidence in their mother tongue while adapting to new linguistic input. Incorporating playful activities like character storytelling or matching games within the short sessions can further motivate children. In summary, starting with brief, regular, and enjoyable learning moments tailored to a child’s attention span will support long-term success in character recognition. It’s not how long you study but how well you maintain the child's interest and comfort that makes all the difference.
