Obedience Didn’t Look Like What I Was Taught

I used to wear the title of “wife” with pride.

Not because anything was healthy or whole—but because I believed holding the position meant I was doing the right thing. I thought keeping the peace, staying agreeable, and enduring quietly was how a faithful woman honored her vows.

But over time, I began to notice the cost.

I wasn’t just sacrificing comfort—I was slowly setting aside my peace, my boundaries, and my clarity. And that forced me to ask questions I had avoided for a long time:

Am I seeking God’s approval… or simply trying to fulfill a role?

Is this marriage drawing me closer to Him—or pulling me further away from who He’s calling me to be?

What am I modeling for my children about love, faith, and self-respect?

“For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God?” — Galatians 1:10

I had always known Scripture called wives to submit—but I had overlooked that marriage was also designed to reflect Christ’s love, peace, and mutual honor.

“Seek first the kingdom of God…” — Matthew 6:33

“God has called us to live in peace.” — 1 Corinthians 7:15

What I eventually understood was this:

Faithfulness does not require the loss of self.

Submission was never meant to silence discernment.

And staying, at all costs, is not always obedience.

Walking away wasn’t about rejecting marriage—it was about honoring God, my children, and the worth He placed on my life.

I’ve learned that my identity is not found in a title, but in alignment with truth. And that peace is not something we’re meant to postpone indefinitely in the name of endurance.

If you’ve ever felt torn between maintaining a role and listening to what God is quietly revealing to you, you’re not alone.

I’m curious—have you ever reached a moment where obedience required deeper discernment rather than endurance?

... Read moreReflecting on my own journey, I realized that obedience within marriage doesn't always mean blind submission or constant endurance. It's about discerning when staying serves growth and peace, and when it becomes a silent sacrifice of our true selves. Like many, I was taught that a wife’s role involved quiet endurance and unwavering compliance. Yet, over time, I came to understand that true biblical obedience is rooted in mutual respect, love, and honoring God’s call to peace. One critical turning point for me was recognizing that faithfulness isn’t about losing your identity but aligning it with truth. When I began to honestly assess my marriage, I asked myself difficult questions: Am I living to please God or just fulfilling roles expected by society? Is my marriage reflecting Christ’s love or hiding wounds behind a facade of obedience? These questions helped me see that submission is not about silence; it’s about wise, loving discernment. I also learned that peace is an essential part of God’s plan for us. 1 Corinthians 7:15 speaks to living in peace, and Matthew 6:33 encourages seeking God's kingdom first—which means placing our spiritual and emotional well-being above traditional titles or roles when they cause harm. From personal experience, I encourage anyone feeling trapped by expectations to explore what obedience truly means for them. Obedience can mean setting healthy boundaries, having difficult conversations, or even choosing to walk away when staying costs your peace and self-worth. This is not rejection but a courageous act that honors God, protects your identity, and models healthy love for children and others around you. If you’re wrestling with these ideas, remember you are not alone. It’s a journey that requires prayer, wisdom, and a community that supports seeking peace over performance. Sharing your story and listening to others can be powerful steps toward healing and growth. In my experience, embracing a new understanding of obedience has been liberating and deeply aligning with my faith journey.
