CRPS

You Don’t See the Pain: Living with CRPS

You don’t see the pain.

You see me sitting still, maybe even smiling.

You see me holding it together in public, nodding along in conversations, showing up for things I probably had no business attending.

But what you don’t see…

is the fire.

The fire in my legs. The unbearable burning, the stabbing, the throbbing that doesn’t stop.

The feeling like my bones are splintering from the inside out.

You don’t see the swelling that makes walking feel like dragging a thousand pounds.

You don’t see how I cry in the shower because it’s the only place no one can hear me.

You don’t see how I stare at my bed, wondering how I’ll get from here to there.

How I whisper to myself, “Just breathe through it.”

That’s the cruel thing about CRPS.

It hides.

It’s not a cast or a wheelchair. It’s not a bandage or a bruise.

It’s invisible.

But it never leaves.

It’s with me every second. And somehow, I’ve gotten really good at pretending I’m okay…

Even when I’m not.

I fake smiles. I push through. I minimize it when people ask how I’m doing.

Because how do you explain this kind of pain to someone who’s never felt it?

How do you describe the way it steals you, bit by bit?

The plans you cancel.

The dreams you shelve.

The version of yourself you used to be—before the pain.

And honestly? That’s the part that hurts the most.

Not just the burning in my limbs.

But the burning ache of what I’ve lost.

Who I used to be.

The girl who could dance without flinching.

The woman who could go for a walk and not worry if her legs would give out.

The friend who said yes to plans without hesitation.

Now I’m always weighing the pain.

Is it worth it?

How bad will it be after?

CRPS doesn’t just affect your nerves. It changes your entire world.

But even on the darkest days, I still try.

I still get up.

I still show up.

Even if I’m hurting, even if I’m slower, even if I cry behind closed doors—

I’m still here.

And if you’re reading this, hurting too… I see you.

You’re not weak.

You’re not lazy.

You’re not broken.

You’re surviving something most people couldn’t even imagine.

So if no one else tells you today—

You’re strong.

You’re allowed to grieve.

And you are not alone.
