Wandering Through Yunnan: LIJIANG (丽江)

One day I was getting lost in a maze of ancient alleys, the next I was staring directly at a 4500m tall mountain. That’s Lijiang for you - a place of incredible contrasts. ✨

Planning this trip can be intense, so here are the most crucial tips I wish I’d known before I went:

🏔️ How to ACTUALLY book the Snow Mountain cable car: This is the #1 challenge. Tickets sell out in seconds. You MUST book them at 8:00 PM the night before on the official WeChat mini-program “丽江旅游集团“. Be logged in and ready to tap!

🏡 Choose your town wisely: Don't just stay anywhere!

- Lijiang Old Town: Best for first-timers who love a lively vibe.

- Shuhe: For a quieter, more relaxed and romantic atmosphere.

- Baisha: The most authentic and rustic, with unbeatable direct mountain views from guesthouses.

🍲 The one meal you can't miss: While mushroom hotpot is famous in Yunnan, the true Lijiang specialty is the Lijiang Cured Pork Rib Hotpot (腊排骨火锅). It’s salty, savory, and the perfect way to refuel after a long day of exploring.

🕰️ Want to see Lijiang 20 years ago? If you have an extra day, take a trip to Shaxi Ancient Town. It’s one of the best-preserved stops on the Tea Horse Road and feels like stepping back in time.

These tips barely scratch the surface! My full blog post has a detailed 4-day itinerary, a guide to avoiding altitude sickness, what to pack, and a full breakdown of how to plan that unforgettable day trip to Shaxi.

... Read moreWhen planning your visit to Lijiang, having access to detailed maps is invaluable. For instance, the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Blue Moon Valley maps help you navigate these breathtaking spots with ease, ensuring you don't miss iconic views or hidden trails. Using these maps, you can plan your routes to maximize sightseeing while accommodating your fitness level and weather conditions. Lijiang Ancient Town and Shuhe Ancient Town each offer unique atmospheres, and maps guide you through their maze-like cobblestone streets, allowing you to uncover tranquil corners away from the bustling tourist areas. Don't overlook the nighttime allure of Lijiang Old Town, where the illuminated alleys and lively nightlife create an enchanting ambiance perfect for evening strolls. For those exploring further, Tinghua Valley presents a serene hiking experience framed by Yunnan’s mountain beauty. Club Med Lijiang offers panoramic views of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, which your maps can help you locate for breathtaking photo opportunities. From personal experience, carrying printed or offline maps is a lifesaver since mobile data connections can be spotty in mountainous regions. Combining physical maps with apps enhances your confidence in discovering must-see sites and local eateries, ultimately enriching your Yunnan adventure.
