Shopping in Beijing?

Beijing is full of charm and surprises at every corner. I spent about 3–4 days just wandering around and exploring different shopping areas — each with its own unique vibe and experience.

1. Wangfujing Street

This is probably the most famous shopping street in Beijing, and for good reason. I recommend starting your visit at Joy City, then heading to Beijing APM. The street itself is pleasant for a stroll, lined with souvenir shops, international brands, and duty-free stores. You can also get to try the famous peking duck restaurant, 四季民福 around the area.

2. Qianmen Street

Qianmen has a special charm, especially at night when the traditional buildings are beautifully lit. The whole area feels like stepping back in time. Be sure to leave some room in your stomach — there are plenty of street food stalls worth trying! You can even catch a live band performance while enjoying your snacks in the cool evening air.

3. 798 Art District

Once an old factory area, 798 Art District is now buzzing with creativity. You’ll find trendy fashion stores, art galleries, and cozy cafes tucked along its streets. I had one of the best dumplings of my trip at Liumama, and the coffee at Voyage was very fragrant. It’s a great place to shop for unique clothes or artsy souvenirs — though not so much for snacks.

4. Sanlitun

Sanlitun is like Beijing’s version of Orchard Road — full of high-end brands and trendy local labels. It’s conveniently located near a train station, making it easy to get to. Start your day with a bite at Soho (I tried a mochi egg tart for about SGD $3!), then head to T+ Mall and cross the street to TaiKoo Li. Don’t miss the basement level — there are more shops downstairs!

5. Shichahai (Sha Hai) Street

This area is perfect for a relaxing stroll by the lake, especially in the cool weather. The old streets are lined with shops and food stalls, creating a lively yet laid-back atmosphere. I tried a lamb skewer for $2 — it was so satisfying in the chilly air! You can easily spend hours exploring the side streets filled with souvenirs and local snacks.

✨ Final Thoughts:

Beijing offers such a great mix of the old and new — from modern malls to historical streets full of character. Whether you’re into luxury shopping, local crafts, or just snacking your way through the city, there’s something here for everyone.

... Read moreWhen planning your shopping trip in Beijing, it's helpful to know a bit more about each district’s vibe and what to expect beyond just the famous spots. Wangfujing Street remains the heartbeat of Beijing's retail experience. While it's packed with international brands and duty-free shops, don't miss some of the lesser-known shops tucked away in alleys nearby. These spots often host unique local crafts and traditional goods that make memorable souvenirs. For those curious about the history and culture behind the modern facades of Wangfujing, guided walking tours can offer a deeper understanding of the area's evolution and the significance of its iconic street signs and stores. The nearby “jing men jiu shuan” (a famous store in the area) is a classic example of time-honored commerce blending with new-age retail. On the other hand, Sanlitun is perfect for fashion lovers seeking the latest in high-end labels and emerging Chinese designers. The Taikoo Li and T+ Mall complexes offer a shopping experience akin to global metropolitan hotspots, but with a distinctly Beijing flavor. Many cafes and restaurants within these malls are great for people-watching and relaxing after a long day. Qianmen Street provides a nostalgic walk through traditional Beijing architecture. Its night market is buzzing with flavors, where you can sample authentic lamb skewers and other street delicacies that are often hard to find in bigger malls. Live performances add a festive vibe, making it more than just a shopping stop. If you’re an art enthusiast, the 798 Art District’s galleries and boutiques are a must-visit. It’s a place where commerce meets creativity, and you’ll often find limited-edition artworks and designer collectibles here. While snacks are more limited, cafes like Voyage offer excellent spots to recharge. Lastly, Shichahai’s unique lakeside setting combines serene strolls with lively street vendors. It’s an excellent alternative to busy shopping districts for those wanting a relaxed afternoon while still picking up handcrafted goods. Beijing’s shopping districts vary not only in goods offered but in atmosphere and cultural depth, making your visit a rich learning and sensory experience. Whether you’re hunting for luxury brands, quirky souvenirs, or delightful street eats, these neighborhoods promise something special.
