Why I chose SGH + My Prenatal Experience

I’m currently 3 months postpartum after giving birth to my first child, and I wanted to share my experience delivering at SGH. There are many reviews about KKH and NUH, but not much about SGH, so I hope this helps mummies who are considering it 🤍

📍 Why I chose SGH

I chose SGH mainly because it’s very near my home (about 10min walk), which gave me peace of mind. I also preferred a public hospital for subsidised rates, with the plan to switch to private later in pregnancy.

I was also lucky that my aunt works at SGH and delivered both her children there, so I knew which doctor to choose and felt reassured that I was in good hands.

👩‍⚕️ Prenatal check-ups (Subsidised route)

My prenatal visits were standard—registration, BP check, height and weight, urine test, then consultation. As a subsidised patient, I saw rotating doctors. Since my pregnancy was low risk, I was comfortable with this arrangement.

The doctors were patient and clear, mainly checking baby’s growth and answering questions. Each visit took about 2–3 hours, and overall my prenatal journey was smooth.

🔄 Switching to private patient

I converted to a private patient at week 36 and chose Dr Dev (Dr Devendra), whom I saw at weeks 36 and 38. He wasn’t available during my EDD week, but he tried his best to support my preference for a natural birth.

He also arranged for me to meet Dr Rachel at week 39 in case I delivered while he was away.

👉 Part 2: Labour & Delivery Experience coming next

2/2 Edited to

... Read moreFor expectant mothers curious about the labour and delivery experience at SGH, I found that having a close support network was invaluable. Knowing my doctors and their availability beforehand eased any anxiety about delivery day. During labour, it's important to communicate your birth preferences clearly with your healthcare team, as I did with Dr Dev and Dr Rachel. Although my prenatal visits could be lengthy, the thorough monitoring gave me confidence in my baby's development. I also recommend planning for potential doctor changes near the due date, as continuity and clear handover help smooth the birth process. SGH's proximity to home meant I could quickly reach the hospital when the time came, which was reassuring for me. Overall, choosing a public hospital like SGH allowed me to balance quality care and subsidies, easing financial concerns while receiving excellent medical support. I look forward to sharing more about my labour and delivery story soon—stay tuned for part two!

Why I chose OSCAR > NIPT
When I first got pregnant, I thought NIPT was something every pregnant woman automatically did. The more pregnancy content I consumed, the more it seemed like NIPT was the "standard" option, so I was quite surprised when my gynae recommended OSCAR instead. As a first-time mum, I had n
