Why I chose SGH + My Prenatal Experience

I’m currently 3 months postpartum after giving birth to my first child, and I wanted to share my experience delivering at SGH. There are many reviews about KKH and NUH, but not much about SGH, so I hope this helps mummies who are considering it 🤍

📍 Why I chose SGH

I chose SGH mainly because it’s very near my home (about 10min walk), which gave me peace of mind. I also preferred a public hospital for subsidised rates, with the plan to switch to private later in pregnancy.

I was also lucky that my aunt works at SGH and delivered both her children there, so I knew which doctor to choose and felt reassured that I was in good hands.

👩‍⚕️ Prenatal check-ups (Subsidised route)

My prenatal visits were standard—registration, BP check, height and weight, urine test, then consultation. As a subsidised patient, I saw rotating doctors. Since my pregnancy was low risk, I was comfortable with this arrangement.

The doctors were patient and clear, mainly checking baby’s growth and answering questions. Each visit took about 2–3 hours, and overall my prenatal journey was smooth.

🔄 Switching to private patient

I converted to a private patient at week 36 and chose Dr Dev (Dr Devendra), whom I saw at weeks 36 and 38. He wasn’t available during my EDD week, but he tried his best to support my preference for a natural birth.

He also arranged for me to meet Dr Rachel at week 39 in case I delivered while he was away.

... Read moreChoosing the right hospital for prenatal care is a major decision for expectant mothers. From my personal experience at SGH, the proximity of the hospital to home was a huge comfort, reducing travel stress during appointments. The subsidised route was also a great financial relief, especially since prenatal care can add up. At SGH, I appreciated how thorough and patient the doctors were during each consultation. Despite seeing different doctors, I never felt a lack of continuity because they carefully reviewed my history and addressed any concerns about my baby's growth. This rotating doctor system might suit low-risk pregnancies well, ensuring attentive care without the high cost of private consultations. An important step was switching to private care in my late pregnancy, which gave me access to a specific obstetrician, Dr Devendra. Knowing I had a trusted doctor who supported my preference for a natural birth boosted my confidence. SGH’s arrangement to connect me with another specialist during his absence shows the hospital’s dedication to continuous, personalized care. From prenatal screenings like NT scans and growth checks to managing tests such as blood pressure and urine analyses, every step felt organized and reassuring. The hospital facilities were clean and well-equipped, contributing to a smooth prenatal journey. For mothers considering SGH, my advice is to weigh the benefits of starting with subsidised care and then moving to private services as your pregnancy advances. This approach balances cost and personalized attention effectively. Also, leveraging any personal connections or recommendations—like my aunt working there—can ease anxiety and help in selecting the right doctor. Overall, my prenatal experience at SGH was positive, characterized by compassionate medical staff, well-structured appointments, and a smooth transition between types of care. I look forward to sharing my labor and delivery insights in the next part of my story, hoping it will provide even more support to fellow mums-to-be.

Hi, thanks for sharing your experience w sgh, indeed not many reviews for them. Other than Dr Dev, you delivered with Dr Rachel right? So are these 2 the gynae you would recommend?

KKH subsidised to private
1️⃣ Why KKH? I chose to go KKH for all my pregnancy checkups simply because it is the nearest hospital from my house. It takes only about 20-30min (depending on bus waiting time) from my doorstep to KKH, so it is very convenient. And of course, with KKH being a well-known women's and children&
