9 hours without pumping… regret?😵‍💫

Travelling with a baby is one thing…

but pumping outdoors? That’s a whole different challenge 🥲

One of my biggest worries as a breastfeeding mum is pumping outside.

I much prefer doing it at home, so outdoors = emergency only.

But with a family trip coming up, I decided to test my limits:

How long can I actually go without pumping?

So we brought our 5-month-old to Gardens by the Bay for a trial run 🌿

___

Reality Check #1 : Pumping Timing 🍼

Before leaving at 2pm, I pumped for 30 minutes (baby’s backup milk).

We spent the whole day out… and I kept delaying pumping.

👉 By the time I finally pumped again… it had been ~9 hours

Ouch.

Lesson learnt:

🚨 Don’t push your limits too far

✔ Plan pumping breaks in advance for long outings

___

Reality Check #2 : Long Outings with Baby ⏰

We only left around 8pm.

By the time we got home, bathed baby, and I showered, it was 11pm 🫠

Time passes WAY faster than you think when you’re out with a baby.

Lesson learnt:

👉 Always factor in buffer time (feeding, diaper changes, rest)

___

Reality Check #3 : Indoor vs Outdoor ❄️

Flower Dome = lifesaver from the heat ☀️

(although… sweaty + aircon = freezing 😅)

Baby? Slept like a boss 😴

___

The little moments that made our day:

🥹 A 2-year-old came over to “make friends” with our baby

💕 A friendly uncle from the USA said he has “baby luck”, babies always love him 😂

These little interactions made the day extra special.

___

⚠️ My honest takeaway

As a one-time test, it was manageable… but I wouldn’t recommend it 😵‍💫

Going too long without pumping:

💔 Uncomfortable

📉 May affect milk supply

Still, it was a beautiful day out with my baby 🤍

___

✨ Summary of what I learnt

✔ Don’t skip pumping for too long

✔ Plan pumping ahead for long trips

(pump on the go if needed 👶)

✔ Indoor places help A LOT with baby comfort

✔ Always add buffer time (everything takes longer with a baby) 👶

___

💬 Mums, how do you handle pumping when you’re out for long hours?

Next post: simple review of baby-friendliness at Gardens by the Bay 👶🌿

5/5 Edited to

... Read moreAs a breastfeeding mom, travelling with a baby can quickly turn into a complex juggling act—especially when it comes to maintaining a pumping schedule. From my recent outing to Gardens by the Bay, I realized just how critical it is to plan pumping sessions carefully to avoid discomfort and potential issues with milk supply. What stood out most was the difficulty of pumping outdoors, which is not just about finding the right spot but also managing time effectively. I used a muslin swaddle to shield my baby from the strong afternoon sun, and the Flower Dome provided a much-needed respite from the heat. However, the transition between different transport modes, the time spent exploring, and infant care activities like feeding and diaper changes added up quickly, cutting into my pumping window significantly. Through this experience, I learned the importance of building a flexible schedule that includes buffer time. When you’re out with a baby, everything tends to take longer—from getting ready to eating, to rest periods—and these unpredictable moments can push back your pumping times. Also, preparation is key. Carrying enough backup milk and having formula on hand for emergencies helped me stay calm and focused on enjoying the day despite the delayed pumping. Using discreet, portable pumping equipment can also make on-the-go sessions easier and more comfortable. A valuable takeaway is to never ignore the signs of discomfort or engorgement. Going nine hours without pumping caused painful fullness and emotional stress, which could impact milk production if repeated frequently. Lastly, outdoor versus indoor environments can affect baby’s comfort and your pumping experience. While the air-conditioned Flower Dome was cold after the heat, it ensured my baby slept peacefully, which in turn made pumping possible without rush or stress. For other mums planning long outings, my advice is to plan your pumping times ahead, bring all necessary supplies, choose baby-friendly venues with indoor rest areas, and be kind to yourself if you can't stick to your usual schedule perfectly. Sharing tips and learning from others’ experiences can also help make breastfeeding and pumping on the go more manageable and less daunting.

Suggest to bring a hand held manual pump, and breast pads, if you plan for a day out. Pump At least every 4 hr to maintain milk supply.

I chose not to breastfeed — and that’s okay 🤍
Why I chose not to breastfeed This was one of the hardest decisions I made as a new mum, because no matter what you choose, someone always has an opinion. But I realised very quickly that motherhood isn’t about proving how much you can sacrifice — it’s about showing up as the best version of

Pumping Mistake I Didn’t See It Coming
After being discharged from the hospital, I went straight into pumping. For all my babies, I chose to exclusively pump because I personally don’t like the latching feeling. PP Day 2 I pumped for 15 minutes… but nothing came out. I thought, “Okay, maybe my milk hasn’t come in yet,” so I didn
