Our Baby's First Flight with SQ (6 Months Old) 👶
We had a family trip to China in May 2026, just one week after our baby turned 6 months old. It was also his very first flight! ✈️👶
Before this trip, we did a few travel trials (which I shared in my previous posts) to prepare ourselves for travelling with a baby. 😅
Today, I'd like to share our experience flying with Singapore Airlines (SQ). Hopefully, this gives new parents a better idea of what to expect. 😊
🎒 What We Packed in Our Cabin Bag
• Milk powder
• Hot and cooled boiled water in thermal flasks (we were allowed to bring boiled water through security because we were travelling with a baby)
• Diapers, wet wipes, and a disposable changing mat
• One spare set of baby clothes (in case of a diaper blowout)
• Bib and handkerchief
• A small toy for comfort (optional)
• Swaddle (to keep him warm on the plane)
• Pillow (just in case)
• Wearable breast pump (I was still pumping every 3 hours then)
• Oral and nipple wipes
• Baby hand sanitiser
🎒 What We Actually Used
We actually packed much more than we needed! Surprisingly, we didn't use the toy, pillow or spare clothes at all.
The items we used the most were:
- Dry tissues (for meals, pumping, wiping milk spills and general cleaning)
- Diapers
- Bibs (our baby drooled a lot!)
That said, I'd still recommend bringing a spare set of clothes just in case of a diaper blowout. Thankfully, ours didn't have one. 😆🙏
🎁 Little Welcome Gifts from SQ
When we boarded, one of the cabin crew surprised our baby with a small welcome gift pack, which was such a thoughtful touch. It included:
• Three packs of baby food suitable for babies aged 4+ months (see image 2)
• Two cute plush toys (see image 3)
Our baby had just started solids, but since it was already around 9pm, we saved the baby food for after the flight. He absolutely loved it! ☺️
🛏️ 👶 Infant Ticket & Baby Bassinet
One thing to note is that our baby's ticket had to be arranged by calling the SQ hotline.
One of the perks of travelling with an infant is that you'll usually be assigned the bulkhead (front row) seats, where a complimentary baby bassinet can be installed (subject to availability).
Since our flight was only about 4.5 hours, one of the cabin crew asked if we'd still like the bassinet (image 5) to be set up. We decided to go ahead with it, and we're really glad we did! It gave our baby a comfortable place to rest, and it also meant we could enjoy our meals with both hands free once he fell asleep.
Although the bassinet has a maximum weight limit of 14 kg, our baby, who weighed about half that, was already a comfortable fit. He still had enough room to stretch his legs comfortably, but it did make me wonder if bigger babies would still be as comfortable in it. 🤔
✈️ Takeoff
I was most worried about how my baby would cope with the change in cabin pressure during takeoff.
To help, I gently covered and pressed his ears, hoping it would reduce any discomfort. I'm not sure whether this actually helped or if he simply tolerated the pressure change well, but to my surprise, he didn't cry at all! Instead, he was simply curious about everything happening around him.
We did the same thing again on our return flight, just in case, and thankfully he handled it just as well.
🍼 Feeding on the Plane
My baby was still awake when dinner was served. The cabin crew kindly staggered our meals, serving my husband's meal first while I looked after our baby. Once he had finished, we swapped, and they brought out my meal while he took over.
Soon, our baby fell asleep, so we settled him in the bassinet. I could then finish my dinner in peace, and even enjoy the Magnum ice cream! 🍦
😴 Sleeping on the Plane
I expected getting him to sleep on the plane to be one of the biggest challenges, but surprisingly, he seemed very comfortable in the bassinet.
I had packed a pillow because I thought he might need extra support, but two blankets provided by SQ were more than enough. One acted as a mattress while the other kept him warm.
🤱 Pumping on the Plane
This was honestly one of the things I was most anxious about before the trip.
I had never pumped in public before, so I kept telling myself that if I could avoid pumping, I would.
However, after dinner, the cabin lights were dimmed and most passengers had fallen asleep. Since I was seated by the window (image 4) with my husband was beside me, it gave me a little more privacy. SQ had also provided blankets, so I simply covered myself with one, wore my wearable breast pump underneath, and pumped discreetly.
I was so relieved that it worked out because otherwise I would have been extremely engorged by the time we reached our hotel, which was still about an hour's drive from the airport.
💛 Overall
Looking back, we're really grateful that our baby's first flying experience with SQ was such a pleasant one, and we hope our experience gives other new parents a little more confidence before taking their baby's first flight. ✈️👶💛
