is skinny shaming real?

Is skinny shaming real? I’ve always wondered that because I’ve struggled with gaining weight my whole life. No matter how much I eat or even when I lift and try to build muscle, my body just doesn’t seem to put on weight. It’s frustrating, and while I’m working on being kinder to myself, it’s definitely still a work in progress.

Growing up, I was often made fun of for being too skinny. People would make comments about my arms or legs, or say things like I needed to eat more, as if I wasn’t already trying. And whenever I bring it up to someone, the response is usually something like, “Well at least you’re skinny” or “That’s not a bad problem to have.”

The truth is, body shaming exists in many forms, and skinny shaming is one of them. It may not always be taken seriously, but it still hurts when people make negative comments about your body. Everyone struggles in their own way, and I wish people would understand that being thin doesn’t automatically mean you’re confident or happy with yourself.

... Read moreMany people don’t realize that skinny shaming can be just as hurtful as other types of body shaming. The phrase “I hate being called ‘lucky’ for being too skinny” perfectly captures the frustration of those who face this issue. Unlike the common perception that being thin is automatically a positive trait, many who are naturally skinny experience insecurity, social pressure, and emotional pain due to constant commentary about their bodies. Skinny shaming often involves unsolicited advice like “eat more” or jokes questioning one’s health or strength. These comments can lead to feelings of alienation and self-doubt. For some, the struggle to gain weight involves difficulties with metabolism, appetite, or even underlying medical conditions, making it more than just a lifestyle choice. Encouraging comments or dismissing it as a “not bad problem” often downplays the real emotional toll this takes. Addressing skinny shaming means understanding that body confidence and happiness are not guaranteed by appearance alone. Everyone’s body is unique, and societal ideals should not dictate self-worth. Advocacy for body positivity must include acceptance of all body types—thin, average, or plus-size—to foster a more inclusive and supportive environment. It’s also important to recognize the vulnerability that comes with talking openly about these struggles. Creating safe spaces online or offline, like communities tagged #girlpov or #embracevulnerability, allows individuals to share experiences without judgment. Through empathy and awareness, the narrative around body shaming can expand to truly support all who face body image challenges, including those dealing with skinny shaming.

There has been several studies that confirm the existence of a “skinny gene.” Same thing for women who tend to gain weight more easily. It’s not luck, it’s genes.

Do you think skinny shaming is real?
I wanted to share this because skinny shaming is rarely taken seriously. People think it’s “just a compliment” or a joke, but it cuts deep. I’ve been called out for my body more times than I can count, and it’s exhausting. Your size should never define your worth and no one should feel they owe exp

I thought being skinny would make me happy
For years, I chased the flattest stomach, the lowest weight, the tiniest jeans size. I restricted food. Followed fad diets. And even though I "looked" the part, I still felt empty inside. Everything changed when I discovered strength training. I stopped obsessing over how litt

Is “Skinny Fat” Actually Real?
I keep hearing the term “skinny fat” and people seem split on whether it’s real or just another label we made up. Some say you can look thin but still be out of shape or unhealthy. Others think it’s just body shaming in a new form. Personally, I think it’s more about muscle vs fat, not the numb

What I ate to go from skinny fat to toned
Nutrition is the most important part when it comes to showing more muscle tone on your body. You’ve heard it a million times: you can’t out train a bad diet. Once I learned that and zoned in on what I was eating, I really started to notice a difference in the way I looked, especially my stomach

I agree Skinny shaming is real
As a kid, I was always on the skinny side. Puberty hit and I finally grew into my body—120 pounds all through high school. People used to judge me for eating a lot and “still being skinny.” Fast forward to motherhood… I gained weight like many of us do. I’ve been on a long weight-loss and fitnes

Skinny shaming is real, agree or not?
“You’re so lucky to be skinny.” I can’t even count how many times I’ve heard that. But the truth is I never actually felt “lucky.” Growing up tall and skinny wasn’t something I chose. In middle school, high school, even college, I was relentlessly bullied for how I looked. People called me mean

The Truth About Being “Skinny Fat”
Being “skinny” doesn’t always mean being healthy. You can look slim but still have a high fat percentage, low muscle tone, and low energy — that’s what’s often called skinny fat. It’s the result of eating too little, skipping strength training, or relying on sugar for quick energy. The truth is:
