I want to be able to take care of myself

My husband pretty much takes care of everything when it comes to our cars whether it’s cleaning them, getting them checked, making sure the tires are good, or even handling all the little details in between. He really likes being the one in control of it, and I appreciate that about him because it means I don’t have to worry about it. The thing is, I want to be involved too, even if it’s just a little bit. I don’t want to always rely on him, especially in case of an emergency where he might not be around. Recently, I started driving again, but I have really bad driving anxiety, and I feel like that holds me back from being more independent. I want to be confident not only behind the wheel but also when it comes to understanding the basics about my car.

For example, I don’t even know how to put gas in my car because he does it for me every single time. Whenever my gas gets low, all I have to do is tell him, and he takes care of it without hesitation. While I’m extremely grateful for him and all he does, part of me wishes I could handle it myself too. I don’t want to always be dependent on someone else for something as simple as pumping gas, because what if I’m on my own and it becomes necessary? I want to push myself to learn and practice these things so that I can build more confidence. I’ll always appreciate that my husband likes to take care of us in that way, but I think it’s also important for me to learn how to take care of myself.

... Read moreTaking steps to become more independent when it comes to car care is a great goal, especially if you currently rely on someone else for all the tasks. If you feel anxious about driving or handling car basics like pumping gas, remember that learning these skills gradually can boost your confidence tremendously. Start by familiarizing yourself with your car’s parts and functions; reading the owner’s manual can be a helpful resource. You might watch tutorial videos online about simple car maintenance tasks such as checking tire pressure, understanding warning lights on your dashboard, or how to safely pump gas. Practicing in low-pressure situations, like at an empty gas station or driving on quiet roads, can make the experience less intimidating. Driving anxiety is common and can hold many people back from feeling independent. One effective approach is to practice relaxation techniques before and during driving, such as deep breathing or listening to calming music. Gradually exposing yourself to driving in different settings can help desensitize anxiety triggers. If the anxiety feels overwhelming, consider talking to a professional counselor or joining support groups focused on managing driving fears. Gaining these skills also prepares you for emergencies—what if your usual helper isn’t available? Being self-sufficient empowers you to handle unexpected situations with grace and confidence. Remember, wanting to learn shows strength and a commitment to your personal growth. It’s perfectly okay to appreciate the support of loved ones while also seeking your own independence. Taking small steps each day will lead to meaningful progress in your journey to confidently manage yourself and your car.

You can and should learn how to pump your own gas. In fact, learn as much as you can. Preferably also how to change a tire because you just never know!
