Are you the type of person to crave a little sweet and salty snack? So am I! And I have just the right snack for you. I love a good grilled cheese, and one time, in the spirit of trying new things, I decided to try putting some jam on it. It was a HIT. It turns into a sweet AND savory snack that melds with the butter perfectly. Here’s how I like to make my grilled cheese with jam, but feel free to adjust the types of cheese/bread/jam as you’d like!
Ingredients (all from Trader Joe's):
sourdough sandwich bread ($3.69)
organic reduced sugar raspberry preserves ($4.49)
provolone cheese ($4.99)
Step 1: Butter both sides of both slices of your bread
Step 2: Toast your bread on medium-low heat for a few minutes, then flip them over.
Step 3: Put a couple slices of cheese on one piece of bread, wait a couple minutes, and then spread a tablespoon of jam on the other piece.
Step 4: Place your bread jam-side down on top of the cheese. Flip as needed until bread is an appropriate amount of crispiness.
And that’s it! Really no different from a normal grilled cheese, you’re just adding some jam is all. I’ve played around with a few different types of jam (apricot, blueberry, raspberry) and cheeses (american, havarti, provolone), but my current favorite is raspberry with provolone. I know apple and cheddar is more popular profile flavor combination, so I may try that sometime too. Let me know if you decide to try this and how you rate it!
... Read moreIf you're looking to elevate your typical grilled cheese, adding jam is a simple yet game-changing idea. From my experience, the key is to butter both sides of the sourdough bread well—this ensures an evenly toasted, golden crust that complements the jam’s sweetness and the cheese's creaminess. I usually recommend starting with provolone cheese because of its mild, slightly tangy flavor that pairs beautifully with raspberry preserves. However, you can experiment with other cheeses like Havarti or even mild cheddar.
When it comes to jam, I personally love using organic reduced sugar raspberry preserves from Trader Joe's for that perfect balance of sweetness without it being overpowering. Apricot and blueberry jams are great alternatives too, each bringing unique fruity notes that enrich the flavor.
Cooking on medium-low heat is essential to give the cheese enough time to melt without burning the bread. I usually wait a couple of minutes after putting the cheese on before spreading the jam on the other slice. Then, placing the jam side down on top of the melted cheese creates a beautiful melding of flavors with every bite.
Don’t be afraid to try this with different bread types as well. While sourdough adds a nice tang, you could also try artisanal white bread or even a hearty multigrain loaf for more texture.
From my personal trials, the combination of mild cheddar with apple jam is a classic choice worth trying if you want an alternative to the raspberry-provolone combo. Each pairing creates a distinct sweet and savory profile that can satisfy adventurous snack lovers.
Overall, adding jam introduces an exciting flavor dimension to the humble grilled cheese sandwich. It's a fun, easy way to experiment in the kitchen and enjoy a snack with familiar yet novel tastes. If you try this combo, I'd love to hear your thoughts and any creative variations you come up with!
I like to slather in butter and sprinkle with sugar. It kinda brûlées the outside.
