How Are You Living?

Here is an exercise I do with my mentees. It’s the “Epitaph” exercise that asks “what do you want your epitaph to say?” Whether you are going to have a gravestone or not, an epitaph, whether literally or figuratively, can be a road map to where you are in life, and where you want to end up. It can serve as a moral compass. Think about this. An epitaph can

1 Help you set goals

2 Make you reflect on your life so far

3 Describe what is important to you in a few words

4 Show your creativity or sense of humor

5 Face your own mortality

6 Question whether you accomplished something meaningful

For just a minute, imagine your funeral. What would your family and friends say about you? What would you like them to say about you? If there is a disparity between the two, the good news is that if you are reading this post you still have time to change before it is too late!

... Read moreThe concept of an epitaph, whether it be for a gravestone or as a figurative reflection, goes beyond mere words. It can serve as a profound tool for self-exploration and growth. Many people find that crafting their epitaph helps clarify their life goals and aspirations. It prompts essential questions: What legacy do you want to leave behind? How do you want to be remembered by family and friends? Engaging in this reflective exercise can facilitate personal growth and encourage you to focus on what truly matters in your life. An epitaph can also encourage creativity and allow humor to shine through, making it a unique expression of oneself. This process involves not just contemplating one’s own achievements but also considering the impact of those achievements on others. Whether your epitaph is serious or lighthearted, it encapsulates the essence of your journey, inviting others to reflect on their own paths. By contemplating your personal epitaph, you cultivate a deeper understanding of your values, enhancing both your present and future actions. Consider asking yourself: What themes resonate with you? How can you bridge the gap between how you are currently living and the impression you hope to leave? Through introspection inspired by the epitaph exercise, you can adopt a growth mindset and make actionable changes in your life. This self-reflective practice encourages a proactive approach to your legacy, leading to a more fulfilled and intentional existence.
