how I could afford living alone @ 23 🥰

Living alone wasn't ever something I set out to do, but moving to a new country where you don't know anyone will quickly turn that into your best option. There are so many tips out there about how to afford living alone, but honestly the two most important factors are where you live and how much you make. Everything else is nice to have. I was luckily able to hit the sweet spot of an affordabl city and decent earnings, and now here we are!

... Read moreIt’s truly a dream for so many of us to finally have our own space, to live alone and experience true independence. When I first started thinking about it, the biggest hurdle felt like, "Can I actually afford to live on my own?" It's a common concern, especially when you're just starting out or moving to a new place like I did. But I'm here to tell you it's absolutely possible with the right strategy and a bit of planning. One of the first things that really made a difference for me, as touched on in the original article, was finding an truly affordable city. This isn't just about rent; it's about the overall cost of living, from groceries to transportation. Doing your research is key. Look at average rental prices for a first apartment, utility costs, and even local sales tax. Sometimes, a slightly smaller salary in a much cheaper city can go a lot further than a higher salary in an expensive metropolis. I spent time comparing different areas, considering factors like public transport access and proximity to work, which helped cut down on car expenses. Next, let's talk about income. While a well-paid job is a fantastic starting point, many of us, including myself, supplement our main income with side gigs. This could be anything from freelance writing or graphic design to dog walking or even selling crafts online. These extra streams of income can make a huge difference, not just for covering monthly expenses but also for building up your savings. For me, these side hustles provided that crucial extra cushion that allowed me to comfortably afford my bills and still have a little left over for fun. Saving up for your apartment deposit and other moving-in costs is non-negotiable. This usually includes a security deposit (often one to two months’ rent), first month's rent, and sometimes application fees. I started an automatic savings transfer each paycheck specifically for this goal. Having that financial buffer before you even move in reduces so much stress. Don't forget to factor in initial utility setup fees too, as these can add up. Once you’re in your own place, budgeting diligently for furniture, decor, and cuteness becomes important. You don't need to furnish your entire apartment overnight with brand-new items. My advice? Prioritize essentials: a bed, a small table and chair, and basic kitchenware. For everything else, get creative! I became a pro at finding amazing deals at thrift stores, online marketplaces, and even local "buy nothing" groups. DIY projects can also transform inexpensive finds into stylish pieces. Remember, your home is a work in progress, and furnishing it affordably can be a fun adventure. Finally, let's cover what you need to live on your own and some essential advice. Beyond the basics, think about a comprehensive budget that includes rent, utilities (electricity, water, internet), groceries, transportation, personal care, and a small allocation for entertainment or emergencies. Track every penny for the first few months to truly understand where your money is going. Setting up automatic bill payments is a lifesaver. For your actual apartment, consider a basic toolkit, some cleaning supplies, and a first-aid kit. Learning basic home maintenance skills, like how to plunge a toilet or reset a circuit breaker, will save you money and stress. Living alone also means taking full responsibility for your well-being. Establish routines, learn to cook simple meals, and actively seek out hobbies and social connections. While living alone is amazing, staying connected to friends and family is still vital for your happiness. It's a journey, but with smart choices and a little bit of hustle, affording your own place and enjoying the freedom of independent living is absolutely within reach. Good luck on your adventure!

I love & support a girl with side gigs. But I’m also pissed off at the economy that so many ppl now have to have side gigs to live a middle class life of having a little extra fun money after paying bills >_>

This honestly doesn’t give much helpful detail at all. It’s a very barebones guide which can help to start but I think some more detail would be helpful
