Every creator eventually arrives at a fork in the road. One path asks you to keep building—despite the silence, despite the criticism, despite the uncertainty. The other invites you to stand on the sidelines and explain why everyone else's work falls short. The internet has made that second path remarkably attractive. Neither King Nor Pawn was born from that tension.
The antagonist in the song isn't someone I hate. He's someone I mourn. The dusty guitar in the corner isn't a real guitar I once saw—it's a piece of storytelling. The older I get, the less interested I become in winning arguments. Being right is nice, but we're all just guessing. What lasts isn't our certainty—it's what we leave behind. Whether you're writing songs, building furniture, raising children, or tending a garden, the work endures long after the debates surrounding it have faded into history.
If Neither King Nor Pawn has a message beyond its lyrics, it's this: creation trumps destruction, every time. I'd rather be remembered for making beautiful things than for explaining why someone else's shouldn't exist. History has a way of forgetting the loudest voices. It has a much harder time forgetting those who quietly kept building.
