WARNING- BLOOD. Watch me practice a draw at home.

I am a phlebotomy student. Set to graduate soon. Our teacher asked us to practice some draws at home.

So, to my fellow phlebotomist, help me on what I can improve. I know I crossed over to reach the gauze. Which I noticed I did after I watched the video. I know crossing over isn’t something we should do. However, I would love to know how I can improve my insertion technique, or anything I could change to make it a comfortable draw for my patients when I start working. Any suggestions I would love to hear. You won’t hurt my feelings because I am here to learn. 🩸💉😊#futurephlebotimist #phlebotomy #phlebotomystudent #phlebotomyaestetic #phlebotomist

... Read moreAs a phlebotomy student practicing blood draws at home, focusing on technique refinement is crucial for patient safety and comfort. One common issue is crossing over during the procedure, which can increase the risk of bruising or injury. To avoid this, try to maintain a consistent insertion angle and develop a steady, confident hand movement when reaching for the gauze. Practicing on training arms or simulation models can help build muscle memory. Additionally, ensuring patient comfort involves gentle handling and clear communication. Always explain the steps calmly to reduce patient anxiety. Using a smaller gauge needle when appropriate and being mindful of vein selection also contribute to a smoother draw. Keep the insertion site clean and use sterile equipment to prevent infection. Furthermore, proper positioning of the arm and tourniquet will make veins more prominent and easier to access. Practice palpating veins thoroughly before insertion to select the best site, avoiding fragile or rolling veins. After the draw, promptly apply pressure with gauze without crossing over the puncture site to minimize bruising. Continuously reviewing instructional videos and seeking feedback from experienced phlebotomists or instructors can accelerate your learning curve. Remember, consistent practice combined with attention to detail and patient care will prepare you for a successful career in phlebotomy, ensuring each blood draw is as comfortable and effective as possible.
