... Read moreLiving in Singapore, I've noticed how judging others seems almost woven into the social fabric. It often comes from a place of competition, which is emphasized from a young age—whether in academics, career, or social status. For many Singaporeans, comparing oneself with neighbours or peers can become a daily habit, sometimes unconsciously. This competitive spirit drives progress but can also lead to negative judgments, as people tend to equate success with personal worth. For example, when a neighbour buys a new car or advances professionally, it can spark a sense of needing to 'keep up'. This creates a cycle where judging others becomes common because it's linked to the pressure to excel and not fall behind. However, it's important to recognize that this behaviour is not inherent but culturally influenced. Understanding this helps to develop empathy and fosters a supportive environment rather than one of criticism. Personally, I've found that shifting my focus from comparison to personal growth improves my wellbeing and relationships. Embracing each person’s unique journey reduces the urge to judge and highlights Singapore’s diverse and vibrant community.
