“Stop & Look”

Teach your emerging readers to slow down when seeing a big word. This helps build confidence, reduce guessing, and increase fluency.

... Read moreAs someone who has worked closely with emerging readers, I’ve found that incorporating the "Stop & Look" approach makes a significant difference in their reading development. This strategy encourages children to pause when encountering larger, more complex words rather than rushing through and guessing. It fosters a mindful reading habit that enhances word recognition and comprehension. One key aspect of this method involves teaching students about syllable division, especially recognizing consonant-le patterns and R-controlled vowels. For example, understanding that the silent "e" at the end of a word can make the preceding vowel say its name helps students break words into manageable parts. When kids learn to identify syllables like vc/cv (vowel-consonant/consonant-vowel) or v/v (vowel/vowel) patterns, reading becomes less intimidating. I also emphasize the importance of phonics rules, including how R-controlled vowels change the sound of vowels (like the "ar" in "car" or "or" in "fork"). When students see a vowel before an R, they can apply this knowledge instead of guessing randomly. This understanding directly supports decoding skills and fluency. In practice, I encourage reading aloud sessions where children can consciously stop at challenging words, segment them into syllables, and decode each part before moving on. Repeated exposure to these patterns, paired with patience and positive reinforcement, gradually increases their reading confidence. By integrating the "Stop & Look" strategy with phonics instruction—highlighting syllable division, consonant-le patterns, and R-controlled vowels—emerging readers become more independent and fluent. It’s truly rewarding to watch learners grow from hesitant to confident readers using this approach.
