Battery ingestion is a frightening experience for any parent, and I want to share more about what I learned during this ordeal to help others stay safe. Small button batteries, like the one my baby swallowed, can cause serious internal injuries if swallowed, so immediate medical attention is crucial. Thankfully, in our case, the battery passed naturally without surgery, but the hospital stay was nerve-wracking. One important lesson is to always check toys and household items for loose batteries that curious little ones can access. Teaching older siblings about battery safety also helps. After the incident, we installed childproof locks on battery compartments and began regularly scanning the environment for any hazards. If your child ever swallows a battery or you suspect it, do not induce vomiting or give them anything to eat or drink — call emergency services right away. Swift action can prevent severe damage to the esophagus or intestines. OVRS provided excellent care and support, and I’m grateful for their expertise. This experience has strengthened my awareness of child safety at home and reminded me how quickly accidents can happen during ordinary play time. Sharing this story can hopefully raise awareness and encourage parents to take extra precautions, keeping our little ones safe and sound.
