Blank, bleed through, final page 🖍️

When working with art journals or sketchbooks, encountering blank pages and bleed-through can be quite frustrating, especially when you want to showcase your work beautifully until the final page. From my experience, selecting the right kind of paper is critical to minimize bleed-through. Heavier, acid-free papers designed for mixed media usually perform better with markers and inks. I often use a protective sheet or gesso primer on the reverse side of a page before applying paint or markers, which significantly cuts down on bleeding. For blank pages that appear unexpectedly, I like to transform them into opportunities by adding subtle textures or light washes, which both improve the aesthetic flow of the journal and prevent ink from saturating through. For the final page, finishing touches matter. A well-thought-out design or a meaningful quote can provide closure, but it’s also helpful to seal the page with a fixative spray to protect it. Over time, these little adjustments have helped me manage the quirks of physical journals better and maintain the integrity of my creative narratives.
