Microsoft announced a revamp of the Windows update system to be easier to understand and more intuitive, specifically about the name of the update that many consider to be long, complex, and full of unnecessary technical information. This time, the company switched to a new name that seemed simpler and more user-friendly so that everyone could immediately understand what the update was about.

For example, from the original, on the Windows Update History page, it might show the name 2025-10 Cumulative Update for Windows 11, version 25H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5066835) (26200.6899), which is too long and technical.

Now it will be shortened to Security Update (KB5066835) (26200.6899), which is much shorter, more concise, and clearer. This new name will only focus on key parts, such as KB numbers, build numbers, or versions, cutting out data like the system architecture or the preface.

This change is not limited to major Windows system updates, but also covers other types of updates, such as the .NET Framework, drivers, AI components, as well as Visual Studio. Users will start to see this new name on Windows Update, Update History, and Windows Release Health pages. The Microsoft Update Catalog and Windows Server Update Services will continue to use the same name.

Microsoft says that this improvement will help all groups of users, especially the average non-IT person, to understand system updates more easily. See the name and immediately know that it is a new security update or example, making the overall implementation look tidy and unconfusing. There are also bug fixes like error code 0x800f0983, as well as other errors related to the update, to make Windows use smoother and more stable than before.
