30th Anniversary Task Manager, a Windows user identification program that is often triggered every time the machine freezes, or the program doesn't respond. Dave Plummer, a former Microsoft software engineer, has told a throwback to the day he first created the program on November 10, 1995, which marks the 30th anniversary of this year.

During the development phase of Windows NT, there was no graphical tool that could view the processor state like Unix's ps or top commands. Plummer developed Task Manager as a hobby because it needed a tool that could see what was running in the straightforward system.

And when he brought it to the NT team to experiment, NT project leader Dave Cutler was so fond that he ordered it packed into Windows, even though the Windows 95 team wasn't flattered because it felt it made the Start menu look too complicated for casual users.

The first version of Task Manager was only 85KB small, designed to separate Thread from other programs so that it could still be run even if the core program was stale. This point made it a lifesaver for Windows users all along, even though it itself was stale occasionally.

He also reveals a fun tidbit that he once found a bug that caused the total CPU load figure to exceed 100%, so put a notification message with his own home phone number into the code, but accidentally released the test build before deleting it, making this still embedded in the source code to this day.

Another tip that many people don't know is that Task Manager runs immediately with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, despite the stale of other programs on the machine. Three decades have passed.
