Gamers and DIY strings suck up SSD in the retail market is disappearing.


Silicon Motion, a major maker of SSD controllers, revealed the latest situation of the SSD market that the retail SSD market for casual users and DIY lines is shrinking so hard that they are almost "gone" from the market after a lot of NAND Flash capacity is rocked to feed the higher-yield AI Server and Data Center markets.

Nelson Duann, senior vice president of Silicon Motion, reported that NAND Flash manufacturers are now focusing primarily on the AI server and Data Center markets, resulting in a significant decline in the proportion of NAND allocated to the general PC market. At the same time, major computer manufacturers such as Acer, ASUS, Dell and HP are starting to buy ready-made SSDs from SSD manufacturers that were originally focused on selling them to the DIY market and the general consumer.

This situation has led to SSDs that should be sold in the retail market being taken over by big computer manufacturers, with Duann stating that OEMs are now not bargaining for the cheapest price as in the past, but want to "have enough" to assemble the machine, resulting in many SSDs flowing into the hands of PC brands instead.

The direct impact is therefore on the general consumer market, especially the computer operators themselves and gamers, who may start to experience higher-priced SSDs, harder to find, and fewer discount promotions than in recent times, especially high-capacity SSDs like 2TB or 4TB that tend to be more clearly affected.

Silicon Motion also estimates that the lack of NAND Flash may be exacerbated in 2027 as the demand for storage for AI Server and Cloud continues to increase, while the expansion of NAND capacity takes a long time, so that the market may not be sufficient to meet demand in the short term.
