🌶️Spicy Rating: 🔥🔥🔥

⭐️Overall rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

My review: For a Drug Dealer x DEA agent, this book was okay. It has the least amount of spicy scenes in it but the spicy scenes you do get are just 🔥 wowowow. I didn’t really care for the end plot twist of the book, I felt it was a little far fetched, but it wrapped up nicely in the Epilogue and turned out pretty sweet. I did feel like the FMC was a bit much in action and description but I understand there was a certain stereotype the author was trying to follow. Not my favorite in the series, not my least favorite. I’d still recommend.

Loosely based on Wizard of Oz

... Read moreHey bookworms! Since I've been getting some questions about my thoughts on Emily McIntire's 'Wretched,' I wanted to dive a bit deeper into this dark romance installment from her popular Never After series. While my initial review gave it a solid 3/5 stars, there's so much more to unpack, especially for those of you trying to decide if it's your next read! First off, let's talk about the premise. The 'Drug Dealer x DEA agent' dynamic is always intriguing in dark romance, and McIntire definitely leaned into the tension that comes with that. Our heroine, the DEA agent, was certainly a character with a lot of strong opinions and actions, which, as I mentioned, felt a 'bit much' at times. However, I can appreciate that the author was aiming for a specific archetype, and her intensity did drive certain aspects of the plot forward. The male lead, despite his profession, had layers that unfolded throughout the story, making their forbidden connection all the more compelling. And yes, for those wondering about the spice—it's absolutely there! Even though I noted it had fewer spicy scenes compared to some other dark romances, the ones that are present are incredibly potent and well-written. They definitely live up to the 'wowowow' 🔥🔥🔥 rating I gave them! Emily McIntire doesn't shy away from the heat, and these moments truly enhanced the chemistry between the characters, adding to the forbidden allure of their relationship. One of the most unique aspects of 'Wretched' is its loose inspiration from 'The Wizard of Oz.' It's not a direct retelling, but rather a clever reimagining that weaves in thematic elements and character parallels in unexpected ways. This subtle nod adds an extra layer of intrigue, prompting you to look for those connections as you read, which I found quite enjoyable even if some parts felt a bit out there. Speaking of intrigue, the book's cover with its striking shattered heart design perfectly captures the essence of this dark romance. It hints at the emotional turmoil and damaged souls within the story, drawing you in even before you read the first page. It's truly a visual representation of the journey these characters embark on. Now, about that plot twist... I'll keep it spoiler-free, but it was definitely one of those moments that made me pause. While it felt a little 'far fetched' in the moment, I have to admit that the way everything came together in the Epilogue was surprisingly sweet and satisfying. It brought a sense of closure that I wasn't entirely expecting, and it really tied the narrative threads together in a way that made the earlier twists more digestible in retrospect. So, who would I recommend 'Wretched' to? If you're a fan of dark romance with high stakes, forbidden love, and authors who aren't afraid to explore morally grey characters, give this one a shot. It might not have been my absolute favorite in the Never After series, but it's far from my least favorite, and it offers a distinct narrative voice and plenty of spicy moments to keep you engaged. It’s certainly a wild ride!
