Hardest Classes Of My Computer Science Degree!!

1️⃣ Discrete Mathematics: My toughest battle. I faced the unfamiliar territory of abstract concepts and rigorous proofs. It was the only class I've failed so far, but I didn't give up. Retaking it the next semester, I dedicated myself to mastering proofs and the unique logic of discrete math. The key? Constant practice and resilience.

2️⃣ Data Structures and Algorithms (DSA): The reputation of DSA preceded itself, known for its complexity. However, the turning point for me was shifting my mindset. Once I opened myself up to the idea that I could learn and excel, things started falling into place. Walking through problems thoroughly and consistently was my strategy for success.

3️⃣ Calculus 2: A challenging yet intriguing adventure. Focused intensely on integrals, it demanded my full attention. Despite the difficulty, I found enjoyment in its focus and depth. It taught me the value of diving deep into a singular topic and emerging with a stronger understanding.

💡 My experience taught me the power of persistence, a positive mindset, and focused study. Each class, with its hurdles, was an opportunity to grow and strengthen my skills.

... Read moreHey everyone! Following up on my last post about the absolute toughest classes in my Computer Science degree, I wanted to dive deeper into how I actually made it through them. It wasn't just about showing up; it was about changing my approach and finding the right resources. If you're tackling Discrete Math, Data Structures & Algorithms (DSA), or Calculus 2, these are the battle-tested strategies that helped me transform my grades and understanding. Conquering Discrete Mathematics: My Proof-Writing Journey Discrete Math was undoubtedly my biggest hurdle. When I failed it the first time, I felt completely lost in the world of abstract concepts and rigorous proofs. But I didn't give up! Retaking it, I realized I needed a completely different strategy. My key was immense studying, not just reading, but actively trying to solve problems. I joined study groups where we'd work through proofs together, explaining our logic to each other. This peer teaching really solidified my understanding. The most impactful change was practicing proof writing daily. I'd grab any textbook or online problem I could find and just write out proofs, even if I thought they were wrong. Getting feedback on these practice proofs was invaluable. Websites like StackExchange or even just asking TAs specific questions about my proof structure made a huge difference. Don't be afraid to fail, but learn from every mistake! Mastering Data Structures & Algorithms: Visualizing the Complex DSA had a reputation, and rightly so! It felt like learning a new language initially. My turning point came when I started using visualization tools. Seeing how algorithms like quicksort or Dijkstra's actually moved data around helped immensely. Websites like VisuAlgo are fantastic for this. Another game-changer was teaching others. Explaining a linked list or a graph traversal to a friend forced me to understand it on a deeper level. And honestly, the YouTube channels were lifesavers. Computerphile broke down complex topics into digestible explanations, and HackerRank tutorials gave me practical coding examples. I spent hours coding out data structures and algorithms from scratch, then optimizing them. It's all about consistent practice and not being afraid to break down a problem into tiny, manageable steps. Slaying Calculus 2: Deep Dives and Digital Gurus Calculus 2 was a beast, especially with its intense focus on integrals and series. I found it to be the hardest of the Calculus series. My success here was all about deep, focused study sessions. I spent countless hours working through problem sets. For understanding, I leaned heavily on some incredible YouTube channels. Professor Leonard was a true godsend; his lectures are long but incredibly thorough and clear, making even the most daunting topics approachable. 3Blue1Brown offered beautiful visual explanations that connected the abstract concepts to intuitive understanding. And, of course, Khan Academy was perfect for quick refreshers and extra practice problems. Just like Discrete Math, study groups were essential here too. We'd tackle tricky integration problems together, comparing methods and helping each other spot mistakes. Don't underestimate the power of working through problems with peers – it's often where the biggest "aha!" moments happen. For all these classes, remember that persistence and a positive mindset are your best friends. You've got this!
