The Grad Survival Tips You Didn’t Know You Needed!

Graduating is such a weird mix of emotions, like, one minute you’re throwing your cap in the air, and the next you’re spiraling because you have no clue what to do next. That’s normal. The first thing I recommend is making a loose post-grad game plan (not a rigid one!). Block out some time each week to apply to jobs or research your options, maybe Monday, Wednesday, Friday mornings for job stuff, and one weekend day to explore new skills or industries. Set small goals like “apply to 3 jobs this week” or “watch one free course on project management.” It keeps you moving without stressing you out. You’re not behind, just building your next chapter one block at a time.

And please update your resume and LinkedIn now that you’ve graduated, it’s honestly the easiest win. Add your degree, clean up the formatting (use bold headers, bullet points, keep it one page if possible), and tailor your experience to fit the kind of roles you want. Then go on LinkedIn, set your profile to “open to work,” and connect with professors, classmates, old coworkers, literally anyone who might know someone. Write a short post saying you’ve just graduated and are exploring opportunities in [insert field here]. You never know who’s watching and willing to help. Just showing up and being visible makes a huge difference.

... Read moreGraduating is a landmark achievement, but it often brings uncertainty about what comes next. A practical approach to easing this transition is creating a weekly planner or game plan, as emphasized in the article’s mention of a weekly schedule—such as dedicating Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings to job searching and one weekend day to skill-building. This methodical time-blocking encourages consistent progress without overwhelming stress. Updating your resume and LinkedIn profile immediately after graduation is critical. Incorporate your new degree, refine formatting with bold headers and bullet points, and keep your resume concise—ideally one page. Tailoring your resume to match the job roles you seek increases your relevance to recruiters. On LinkedIn, setting your profile to “open to work” and actively connecting with your network—including professors, classmates, and former coworkers—can open doors to unadvertised opportunities. Posting about your graduation and career interests draws attention from potential employers and mentors. Additionally, exploring free online courses related to project management and other industries could strengthen your skill set, making you more competitive in the job market. Recognize that progress is built incrementally; setting manageable goals like applying to three jobs per week or completing one course prevents burnout and boosts motivation. The integration of a non-dated weekly planner (such as the DELL Weekly Planner mentioned) supports adaptability, allowing graduates to adjust their plans as they learn more about their interests and the job market. These tips collectively create a foundation for successful career development and personal growth in the post-graduate phase, underscoring the importance of visibility, persistence, and strategic planning.
