Things I learned in my first week in college!

My first week of college was chaotic 😭 I thought I was prepared because I had my schedule, my cute notebooks, and my backpack all set… but there were a lot of little things I didn’t expect. Here’s what I learned fast (and wish someone had told me earlier):

🌸 Nobody knows what they’re doing the first week. You’re not the only one checking your schedule 10 times to make sure you're in the right classroom. Everyone’s lost, confused, and trying to play it cool. You’re not behind, you’re human.

🍒 Professors don’t remind you of anything. No one’s chasing you down like in high school. Assignments are on the syllabus and it’s up to you to stay on top of them. I started using Google Calendar and Google Tasks IMMEDIATELY. Lifesaver.

☁️ Campus is bigger than it looks on Google Maps. Give yourself way more time than you think to get to class, especially if it’s across campus. I was SWEATING that first week from all the accidental power-walking 😅

🧸 You don’t need to buy the textbook right away. Unless the prof specifically says you’ll need it on day 1, wait! Ask if the book will actually be used and check for free PDFs or rentals online. I spent way too much money that first week just because I panicked.

✨ You will be exhausted. The mental and social exhaustion is real. You’re meeting tons of new people, figuring out where everything is, trying to seem normal 😩 it’s a lot. Take time to rest, and don’t feel bad for staying in. College gets better after the first week, I promise.

You’ll figure it out one day at a time 🤍 Let me know what surprised you the most your first week or if you’re starting soon!

... Read moreStarting college is an exciting but overwhelming experience, and many find that the reality can be quite different from their expectations. One common surprise, as noted in the reflections on the first week, is just how large and sprawling the campus really is. While Google Maps might give a basic overview, nothing prepares you for the actual distances you'll need to walk between classes. Some students find themselves racing across campus, breaking into a sweat from the unexpected exercise. This is why it’s essential to plan your schedule with enough transit time between classes. Arriving early not only reduces stress but also helps you familiarize yourself with key locations on campus. Another important takeaway is the newfound independence when it comes to managing your studies. Unlike high school, where teachers frequently remind you about assignments and deadlines, college professors expect you to be self-motivated and organized. Using tools like Google Calendar and Google Tasks is critical for tracking assignments and exams. This approach prevents last-minute panic and helps you maintain a balanced academic workload. Regarding textbooks, it’s wise not to rush into purchasing them immediately. Professors might mention books that are optional or only necessary for certain assignments. Checking if your course materials are available as free PDFs or affordable rentals online can save you a significant amount of money. Many students initially overspend out of anxiety but later realize that some materials were unnecessary. The first week in college also comes with a heavy mental and social toll. Meeting many new faces, finding your way around, and trying to fit in can be mentally exhausting. It’s important to recognize that feeling tired and overwhelmed is completely normal. Taking time to rest and not forcing yourself into every social event can help manage this fatigue. Remember, college life often improves after the first week as you establish routines and friendships. Lastly, the phrases from the images—"First day of school!", "hot Campus is huge", and "My first week! came home and slept 10+ hours every night"—perfectly capture the common initial fatigue from this transition. Prioritize your well-being, stay patient, and know that the chaos will turn into confidence as you get more comfortable with your new environment.
