Things I learned in my first week in college!

My first week of college was chaotic 😭 I thought I was prepared because I had my schedule, my cute notebooks, and my backpack all set… but there were a lot of little things I didn’t expect. Here’s what I learned fast (and wish someone had told me earlier):

🌸 Nobody knows what they’re doing the first week. You’re not the only one checking your schedule 10 times to make sure you're in the right classroom. Everyone’s lost, confused, and trying to play it cool. You’re not behind, you’re human.

🍒 Professors don’t remind you of anything. No one’s chasing you down like in high school. Assignments are on the syllabus and it’s up to you to stay on top of them. I started using Google Calendar and Google Tasks IMMEDIATELY. Lifesaver.

☁️ Campus is bigger than it looks on Google Maps. Give yourself way more time than you think to get to class, especially if it’s across campus. I was SWEATING that first week from all the accidental power-walking 😅

🧸 You don’t need to buy the textbook right away. Unless the prof specifically says you’ll need it on day 1, wait! Ask if the book will actually be used and check for free PDFs or rentals online. I spent way too much money that first week just because I panicked.

✨ You will be exhausted. The mental and social exhaustion is real. You’re meeting tons of new people, figuring out where everything is, trying to seem normal 😩 it’s a lot. Take time to rest, and don’t feel bad for staying in. College gets better after the first week, I promise.

You’ll figure it out one day at a time 🤍 Let me know what surprised you the most your first week or if you’re starting soon!

... Read moreWhew, making it through that first week of college is a huge accomplishment, and you’re not alone if it felt like a whirlwind! The initial excitement of starting something new, reflected in those first-day mirror selfies, quickly gives way to navigating the vastness of campus and the sheer amount of new information. As someone who's been there, I totally get the exhaustion you mentioned – both mental and social. But here’s the good news: once you get past that initial hump, you can start building habits that make college life not just manageable, but truly enjoyable and productive. After you've figured out the basics like where your classes are and how to avoid buying every textbook, the next big step is to establish a routine that actually works for *you*. While the original article touched on using Google Calendar and Tasks, let's dive a bit deeper into how you can make those tools truly effective. Think about when you're most productive. Are you a morning person who thrives on getting things done before noon, or do you find your focus sharpens later in the day, after the campus quiets down? There’s no one-size-fits-all study schedule, and college is the perfect time to experiment and discover your personal peak productivity hours. Don't just block out time for assignments; schedule in dedicated study blocks, even if it's just an hour at first. Consistency is key, and finding your rhythm early can prevent overwhelm later. Another crucial element is finding your ideal study spot. Your dorm room might be great for quick tasks, but sometimes you need a change of scenery to really concentrate. Explore the library – different floors often have different noise levels. Look for quiet corners in academic buildings, or even try a local coffee shop if you thrive on background buzz. Having a go-to study environment can significantly improve your focus and make those long study sessions less daunting. Remember that image of the sprawling campus? Take advantage of it! Sometimes just taking a short walk between study sessions can clear your head. Finally, don't underestimate the importance of balancing academics with self-care. That exhaustion you felt in the first week? It can linger if you don't actively work to combat it. It’s easy to get caught up in the pressure to constantly be studying or socializing, but burnout is real. Schedule downtime, whether it's a Netflix break, a workout, or just calling a friend. And don't be afraid to lean on campus resources. Academic advisors, tutoring centers, and mental wellness services are there to help you succeed, and utilizing them is a sign of strength, not weakness. College is a marathon, not a sprint, and taking care of yourself is paramount to enjoying the journey and reaching your goals.
