Vanilla beans
Vodka (you can also use bourbon or rum but it gives a different flavor)
4 beans for every 1 cup vodka
Split vanilla beans down the middle to open them up. Add to a jar that will have an airtight seal. Cover with vodka. Put the top on your jar and give it a little shake to move the vanilla around. Store in a cool, dark place for at least 8 weeks before using. The longer it sits, the better!

Making your own vanilla extract at home is a rewarding kitchen project that enhances the flavors of your baked goods while allowing you to control the quality and ingredients. Using high-quality vanilla beans, especially those sourced from Madagascar, can significantly improve the taste and aroma. When selecting vanilla beans, look for plump, moist pods with a rich fragrance — these indicate freshness and superior flavor potential. While vodka is the most commonly used alcohol for extraction due to its neutral flavor, experimenting with bourbon or rum can add unique and subtle notes to your vanilla extract, giving your recipes a personalized twist. A key tip is to split the vanilla beans lengthwise before placing them in the jar. This maximizes the surface area exposed to the alcohol, helping to extract the aromatic compounds more effectively. Airtight storage in a cool, dark place is crucial to prevent the extract from degrading due to heat or light. Patience is essential: although the extract can be used after about 8 weeks, allowing it to age longer — sometimes up to 6 months — intensifies the flavor. Remember to shake the jar occasionally, which helps distribute the vanilla essence evenly. Besides enhancing your baking, homemade vanilla extract is an ideal DIY gift idea. Label each jar with the date made and suggested usage time, allowing recipients to enjoy it at its peak flavor. During holidays like Christmas, gifting a batch of this homemade extract adds a thoughtful and personal touch appreciated by home cooks and bakers. In summary, homemade vanilla extract is simple to make, customizable, and offers superior flavor compared to commercial options. It supports sustainable usage by reusing jars and prevents the use of artificial additives, making it a natural choice for culinary enthusiasts. Incorporate this homemade extract into cookies, cakes, frostings, and even coffee drinks for rich, authentic vanilla flavor that elevates every recipe.

Awesome!🩷
