How we fixed our spending as a couple

4/28 Edited to

... Read moreOne of the biggest eye-openers in fixing our spending as a couple was realizing how much those small, seemingly insignificant purchases added up over time. For us, frequent eating out and daily coffee runs were major contributors. Although we didn't completely cut these out, we became more strategic—using gift cards when eating out and tapping into apps offering deals or cash back to reduce costs. This approach allowed us to still enjoy our routines without feeling deprived. Another helpful change was tracking every expenditure, no matter how small. Before, we never really accounted for every dollar spent, especially on small impulse buys. Once we started a daily log, it became clear where our money was leaking. We set a weekly spending limit and committed to stopping once we hit that threshold, which was a game-changer. It made us more mindful and curtailed unnecessary spending easily. Intentionality was key. It wasn't about eliminating all spending but about assigning purpose to every dollar. This mindset shift made budgeting less restrictive and more empowering. With each purchase, we asked ourselves if it aligned with our saving goals, especially saving for our car. We found that embracing this intentional spending habit improved our financial communication as a couple and brought us closer to our goals. For anyone struggling with similar challenges, I recommend starting small: pick one area like food, monitor it closely, and gradually implement deal strategies or substitute habits. Over time, these incremental changes multiply and lead to meaningful savings and financial freedom. Remember, it's about progress, not perfection.
