Last night, Stephan and I went to see Project Hail Mary and saw it in the XD theater with the D-box seats (movement, rumbles, extra effects) and I can say the extras were well worth it and just added to the movie experience. This movie was an excellent adaptation page to screen and I think it was very well done. Just as with the book and audiobook, there were moments in the movie where I was laughing out loud (and maybe shedding a tear too 🥹🥲). It’s very engaging and makes you think and consider different topics. I highly recommend that you go see this movie, even if you haven’t read the book. There is a lot of science (science of finding a “cure” for the sun, space travel, alien life, etc) but it is very accessible and the entire movie remained very engaging. And the relationship and humor/banter between Dr. Grace and Rocky was perfection! 👏🏼 Whereas I went into this movie knowing the plot and ending, Stephan did not and he told me he really enjoyed it too! (Maybe I can get him to read the book now. 😉)
Anyway, obviously ✨ 5/5 stars ✨ … Go see this movie in theaters while you can!

Beyond just the compelling story, what really stood out was the incredible visual design, especially when it came to Dr. Ryland Grace (played by Ryan Gosling) and his journey. I mean, seeing Ryan Gosling in a space suit, floating through the vastness of space—it was just iconic. The Cinemark poster I saw even highlighted it perfectly. The details on his suit, the way it moved, and how it was contrasted against the alien landscapes and Rocky's unique habitat, just pulled you deeper into the narrative. It wasn’t just a costume; it felt like a second skin that told a story of survival and ingenuity.
Speaking of Ryan Gosling, his performance as Ryland Grace was phenomenal. He really embodied the character's blend of scientific genius, self-deprecating humor, and underlying vulnerability. You know, sometimes you see an actor in so many different roles, and you wonder how they'll tackle something completely new. Gosling has such a range, from intense dramatic roles to comedic ones, and in "Project Hail Mary," he brings a unique blend of quiet determination and relatable panic. It's not often you see a protagonist who's a scientist, an amnesiac, and also incredibly charming, all at once. He made the complex scientific explanations not just digestible but genuinely interesting, which is a huge feat for a sci-fi film. He carries so much of the movie on his shoulders, often alone or with Rocky, and his expressions, his movements – even when just reacting – tell such a rich story. It made me reflect on how actors can really make a character their own, bringing unexpected depth to a sci-fi hero.
The D-box seats really amplified the experience of seeing Ryan Gosling navigating his spacesuit through space and confronting the unknown. Every rumble, every subtle movement, made you feel like you were right there with him, experiencing the G-forces of space travel or the impact of a close call. The movie did an amazing job of making you feel the isolation and then the awe of space. The visuals of his ship, the Hail Mary, and the way it was designed for its mission were also incredibly thought-out. You could really appreciate the engineering and the desperate hope behind it all.
For anyone who loves a good sci-fi adventure, especially one that combines hard science with genuine heart and humor, this movie is an absolute must-see. The way Gosling portrays Ryland Grace's intelligence and adaptability, even when facing overwhelming odds, is truly inspiring. It's a reminder that heroism isn't always about brute force, but often about intellect and empathy. If you're wondering what to watch next, and you appreciate compelling storytelling with a fantastic lead, definitely add "Project Hail Mary" to your list. It's an experience that sticks with you long after the credits roll, making you ponder humanity's place in the cosmos and the power of unlikely friendships. And yes, my partner Stephan, who hadn't read the book, was just as captivated! He kept talking about Gosling's character and the plot twists for ages afterwards.
